I experienced the temperature gauge drop to 0 (it turned off) and the cooling fans turned on and ran continuously until I shut the car down. This happened for about 10 consecutive days before it finally had an ECM code that the temperature was below expected value - apparently to a Master Mechanic (my brother) it tells them to immediately replace the Thermostat, as it is not operating at the correct temperature. I replaced the thermostat with an original GM thermostat part and the problem went away. Side note that I noticed the thermostat had been replaced by the original owner according to the dealer report about the cars maintenance. It was an aftermarket part that had some differences from GM's (may or may not have an impact on temperature control in my opinion). The outside rim contained evenly spaced holes around the its flange (Not on GM TSTAT). Also, I replaced a busted side tank radiator 3 months prior to replacing this thermostat.
