I first became aware of this book from an article in the local newspaper. I ordered a copy for myself and received it about 2 weeks ago.

The weather was pretty nice this past weekend. I wanted to take Crimson Pearl out for a little run and Alexis wanted to go the the Tanger Outlet Mall in Blowing Rock, NC. We headed out on Sunday morning, and after a stop at IHOP for breakfast, headed north to Blowing Rock.

Between Lenoir and Blowing Rock, a Ford Ranger passed Crimson Pearl at a pretty good clip. Another mile or two up 321, I heard a siren and saw a NC State Trooper in a Charger with his blue lights on coming up in my rearview mirror. He passed by me and then continued up 321 until he caught the Ranger pickup. Whew!

After our visit to the outlet mall, we headed for "The Little Parkway".

This was a great drive, full of switchbacks, just like a little "Tail of the Dragon". The road was in pretty good shape with lots of falls and streams. We drove it in the opposite direction from what is described in the book. At several points, you can look up and see the Linn Cove Viaduct on the Blue Ridge Parkway. At one point, this route runs parallel to the BRP. It also crosses the Eastern Continental Divide.

When we reached Linville, we headed south on 181 to run part of the Pisgah Loop Scenic Byway.

We didn't run the entire route, just the part that heads to Morganton. On our way down the PLSB, we were behind a Mini-Cooper for a few miles until we got to a section with a passing lane. We went by the Mini-Cooper in a hurry and soon it was no longer in my rearview mirror. I suspect that the folks in the M/C were asking themselves "What was that"?

We intend to check out many more of the scenic byways in this book and hope to post about them with some pictures.
