Help! Programming key fob

I have a 2009 XLR with two Fobs and would like to program a Fob from my previously owned 2006 XLR so as to have three Fobs. Is that possible? I could just give it a try, but I am worried that I might screw up the Fobs that came with the car and are are working.
Has anyone tried to program an older Fob in a newer car?

I bought a newer 08 fob and had it programmed to the car, at the dealership they told be you can only program 2 that will do everything personal, meaning set it for the driver, but the extra was programmed to be used to at least work the buttons to start and the other options, I just can’t set it for a drivers personal settings! So yes it can be programmed to use!
