Just wondering if anyone is planning on going to Sebring next month? David and I are going to be in Sarasota and are driving over for Saturday's ALMS race. Might go for Friday, haven't decided that for sure. PM me if someone wants to see about meeting up at the track. We'll be parked at the Corvette corral.
Hope The Barbie Car doesn't get too upset that we're leaving her home and taking David's C6.

We are still hoping to attend, but it doesn't look good. It is so hard to find a place to stay. We would really love to be there, it's going to be a great race.

Just a few days after the Sebring Winter Test the American Le Mans Series announced the provisional entry list for the 58th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh from Florida. 35 cars have been entered for this years race, which will be held on March 20th.
As Sebring will be run to ACO regulations there will be an LMP1 and LMP2 class. Peugeot will be the top favorite to win this year, the French manufacturer will send two cars to Florida. Gené, Wurz and Davidson will race the #07 Peugeot 908 HDi FAP and Lamy, Bourdais and Minassian will be in the #08 entry. From the five remaining LMP1 teams Aston Martin Racing is probably the best. Primat, Buncombe and Fernandez are the three drivers entered for the race in the car that was fastest at the test, but also crashed heavily.
Drayson Racing will also be in for a fight to become the best of the non-diesel cars. To get the best possible result Paul Drayson and Jonny Cocker are joined by sportscar ace Emanuele Pirro in the Lola Judd. Autocon Motorsports and Intersport Racing will also be entering their Lola B06/10s. The seventh and final LMP1 car on the list is the Creation Autosportif CA10, no drivers are announced for this potential entry. Missing on the list is the Corsa Motorsports Zytek…
Three cars are entered in the LMP2 class. 2010 ALMS champion Patrón Highcroft Racing will be at Sebring with the new HPD ARX-01c for Brabham, Pagenaud and Marino Franchitti. At the test days earlier this week this car was the fastest LMP2. The opposition in LMP2 will come from the Muscle Milk Team Cytosport Porsche RS Spyder (Picket/Graf/Maassen) and the Dyson Racing Team Lola Mazda of Dyson, Smith and Meyrick.
Five LMPC cars will fill up the gap left by the GT1 cars. Five different teams will be racing at Sebring, in what will be the first ever LMPC race. Joel Feinberg and Kyle Marcelli are confirmed in the Primetime Race Group car, while familiar names like Andy Wallace (Genoa Racing), Christophe Bouchut (Level 5 Motorsports, with Scott Tucker), Gunnar Jeanette and Elton Julian (Green Earth Team Gunnar, with Christian Zugel) will also be on the grid. The fifth car is the Intersport Racing FLM09 for Mitch Pagery, Brian Wong and David Ducote.
Perhaps the most interesting class at Sebring will be the GT2 category. Fourteen cars, nine teams, six manufacturers will make up the GT2 grid. Corvette Racing will enter its first Sebring 12 Hours as a GT2 manufacturer and Magnussen, O’Connell, Garcia (in the #3) and Beretta, Gavin and Collard (in the #4) will be aiming for nothing less than a class win at Sebring. Unfortunately for Corvette and fortunately for the fans there are more teams with that exact same aim. BMW Rahal Letterman Racing will again run 2 BMW E92 M3s. Compared to 2009 the line-ups have changed though. In the #90 Dirk Müller will be joined by Joey Hand and Andy Priaulx, while the #92 will have Bill Auberlen teaming up with Tommy Milner and Dirk Werner.
Other candidates for victory are the Flying Lizard Motorsports Porsche 997 GT3 RSR #45 of Bergmeister and Long and the Risi Competizione Ferrari F430 GT3 #62 of Jaime Melo, Gianmaria Bruni and Pierre Kaffer.
Outsiders could well be the #01 Extreme Speed Motorsports Ferrari of Scott Sharp and Johannes van Overbeek.
The GT2 grid is completed by the #02 Extreme Speed Motorsports car of Brown/Cosmo, the #61 Risi Ferrari of Krohn/Jonsson/van der Poele, the Black Swan Racing Porsche #54 of Pappas/Bleekemolen/Lazzaro, the #44 Lizards car of Law/Neiman, the #40 Robertson Racing Ford GT of the Robertsons and David Murry, the Team Falken Tire Porsche of Henzler and Sellers. Making its debut, but not expected to be a frontrunner yet, is the Jaguar XKRS of Gentilozzi, Goossens and Dalziel.
Completing the entry list are the GTC Porsches. Six cars are entered for the season opener at Sebring. Alex Job Racing and The Racers Group will be making a return to the ALMS at Sebring. Bill Sweedler, Romeo Kapudija and Jan-Dirk Lueders are in the #23 AJR Porsche, with Juan Gonzalez and Butch Leitzinger confirmed in the second AJR car, the #81. GMG Racing will enter 1 car, for Bret Curtis, James Sofronas and Andy Pilgrim. The three other cars (TRG #63, WERKS II/P7 Racing #69 and #88 Velox Motorsports) will be driven by Henri Richard/Pat Flanagan, Robert Rodriquez/Galen Bieker and Shane Lewis/Jerry Vento.

AMERICAN LE MANS SERIES
NOTEBOOK - MARCH 12

CORVETTE Z06 CARBON AT SEBRING:

Corvette_Corral_031210_1.jpg
Chevrolet's unveiling of its Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition set off a firestorm of praise and adulation. Fans attending next week's season-opening event for the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patron will be the first ones to get an up-close look as the latest version of America's supercar makes its worldwide public debut.
The Z06 Carbon Limited Edition will be on display next Friday and Saturday in the Corvette Corral at Sebring International Raceway, site of the 58th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh from Florida. The 2011 model continues Corvette's tradition of track-to-street technology transfer.

The unveiling of the Z06 Carbon Limited Edition coincides with Corvette's first race at the Le Mans in 1960.
Corvette_Z06_C_031210_1.jpg
"No GT manufacturer executes our platform of developing leading-edge innovation and technology on the race track for use in production vehicles better than Chevrolet with its Corvette brand," said Scott Atherton, Series President and CEO. "To have General Motors choose our showcase event - the 58th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh from Florida - to publically unveil the new Corvette Z06 Carbon Limited Edition is another testament of GM's commitment to the significance and relevancy of the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patron.
"I am told there is already a record number of Corvette fans coming to Sebring for the race, but if the others where waiting for another reason to attend ... their wish has just been granted!"
The unveiling coincides with the 50th anniversary of Corvette's debut at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1960. The team has been a force at Le Mans since 2001 with six GT1 victories.
This year, Corvette Racing will contest the GT2 class with two Corvette C6.Rs that are based on the road-going ZR1.

first serious crash of the race week:

Oliver Gavin:

Just finished our 1st day of running at Sebring. Alot of brake bedding (discs & pads...). Circuit very changeable, there is a tar/sealant that is used to fill some of the cracks in the surface, well, that is being picked up on the tyres. This makes the grip levels yo yo up and down... The wind has really picked up this... afternoon which also makes the car unpredictable... Apart from that, it's great to be here!!!!

XLRs in FLA

David and I made it down to Florida - we're staying on Anna Maria Island and have already seen 3 XLRs since we arrived on Saturday! First one we saw was a Mary Kay pink one. It wasn't as pink as I expected - I've never seen a MK car before. Sales must not be that great in WI. ('cause we're all just such natural beauties, I guess)...

Wish more of you guys could come to the race- but we'll see you soon. On the Spring drive or at least Colorado!

Kathy and Bruce - meet ya at the Corvette Corral on Friday!

The Corvette team of Johnny O'Connell and Jan Magnussen, seen at Le Mans, France, will race Saturday at the 12 Hours of Sebring.

By Nate Ryan, USA TODAY
Whether it's racing or being raucous, the 12 Hours of Sebring seems to suit Johnny O'Connell's fearless and freewheeling personality perfectly.
Friday, on the eve of America's oldest endurance race, O'Connell and Corvette Racing teammate Jan Magnussen will make their annual trip to Turn 10 and experience the fun-loving side of Sebring International Raceway that's as famous as its bone-rattling pavement.
"(We) always make a point of going for an hour during the day and saying hi to everybody and then escaping," he says, laughing. "Once, I went over to hang out and was there 20 minutes when a beer bottle went flying over my head. People were lighting couches on fire. I'm like, 'Man, a redhead shouldn't be here.' "
Sebring, though, has been the ideal track for the three-time American Le Mans Series champion. Of O'Connell's 38 career victories, a record eight class wins have occurred at Sebring, the legendary track ( built as a World War II training facility) whose first race was in 1950.

AMERICAN LE MANS: Boon for race cars helping road cars
After several seasons dominating the GT1 class, Corvette Racing will enter the newly combined GT class with a C6.R pitted against sports-car icons Jaguar, Porsche, Ferrari and BMW, and O'Connell's experience could be the key to starting its stand at Sebring.

"On any great team, there's an anchor, and Johnny is that guy," says Doug Fehan, the team's program manager. "He knows the track so very, very well. When you have that, it transcends that one guy and makes a huge difference."
O'Connell, 47, is making his 20th consecutive start on the punishing 3.7-mile course, and the Flowery Branch, Ga., resident is a fixture in the ALMS for many other reasons. He holds series records for starts (102), podium finishes (79), top fives (92) and top 10s (99).
But there was a point at which O'Connell seemed destined for another famous track: Indianapolis. In the Indy Racing League's inaugural year of 1996, he made four starts with two top 10s.
He was headed toward a top five at Las Vegas when his rear suspension failed, flipping his Reynard-Ford at 200 mph and leaving O'Connell "trying to stay small" skidding with his head inches from the asphalt. After a wreck at Indy left him injured, O'Connell decided "I'd much rather have a long sports car career than a short open-wheel career."

O'CONNELL: Has vivid memories of Las Vegas IRL wreck (http://www.usatoday.com/sports/motor/2010-03-15-oconnell-irl-wreck_N.htm)
Said Fehan: "Open-wheel cars were his first love. But if you're not on the right team, it almost doesn't matter how talented you are. I think that's why he came to us. He went with a team he thought he could have success."
O'Connell says success will come a lot tougher for one of General Motors' most iconic American brands, and he relishes the thought.
"Before we'd go into a season knowing there's a good chance we could win every race," he says. "It'd be much nicer Monday to say we beat Porsche and Ferrari. You want to beat your competitors in the showroom. That makes the guys in Detroit really happy."

Strong competition for Jan Magnussen at Sebring

When Jan Magnussen on Saturday the 20th of March starts in the 58th version of the 12-hour race at Sebring, Florida, it will be his 12th start at the rugged and challenging circuit. Just like the previous 6 years Jan Magnussen will drive for Corvette Racing, a successful collaboration that has handed Magnussen four victories at Sebring. Corvette Racing has in recent years participated in the GT1 class, but switched in the middle of the season last year for the GT2 class, since the GT1 class no longer offered any resistance. With the "new" GT class comes strong competition. Of the 37 registered cars are 14 cars signed up for GT class. With 7 cars signed up for LMP1, 3 cars in LMP2, 6 cars in LMPC and 7 cars in the GTC, the GT class, it is clearly the largest class in the American sports car classic.

With the quality of the GT class, perhaps the strongest ever, with competition from Porsche, BMW, Ferrari, Ford and Jaguar, it promises close racing on the rugged and challenging circuit.

Jan Magnussen that for the first time in many years will be the only Dane to start at Sebring, welcomes the challenge. "The race at Sebring is very special. The course is very tough and challenging and it is usually very hot. Since the track is very bumpy it is very demanding for the driver, but entertaining for spectators. The atmosphere is very special, with close to 200,000 enthusiastic spectators, many of them camping on the infield for several days before the race. Because the Corvette is the icon of the American sports car, we get lots of support and attention. Sebring is a race that I once hated, but that was because I was always out of luck on that track. Now it's a race that I am looking forward to. The track incurs good racing and with the very strong opponents in the GT class this year, there will be plenty of close racing. You have to give it 100% all the way, to be able to fight for victory and that is exactly how I love to run the race ".

The race at Sebring is the first round of the American Le Mans Series, where Jan Magnussen has won a lot of trophies. As the only driver he has won races in the series every year since the series began in 1999 and in total it has been for 24 victories in the ALMS (not counting his four Le Mans victories) as well as a championship in 2008. In 2010, the goal is to win the championship with his American teammate Johnny O'Connell. For the race at Sebring as well as at Le Mans and Petit Le Mans they will enjoy the assistance of Antonio Garcia, who was the third man in the car in 2009 as well.
