Help! Trtansmission Repair

Hello, all -

Suddenly, my transmission does not engage in reverse
unless I go through "Park."

Could this be only a matter of transmission fluid loss?

If not, what is causing it?

Noticed any oily stuff on the ground around the differential/transmission?

Could be the shifter cable getting ready to go belly up.........
