    3D printing: engines

This should fuel your enthusiasm further; Rocket Lab recently launched their first rocket with a completely 3D-printed engine: Rocket Lab Electron rocket - first flight from Rocket Lab Launch Complex 1, Mahia New Zealand - YouTube CC

    XT5

I'm driving an XT5 AWD Luxury while my car is in the shop getting a short list of warranty items taken care of. The car has three added options: Crystal White Tintcoat paint, ($1200) the more expensive CUE, (which comes with navigation for $1000!) and the fourteen-speaker Bose, as opposed to...

    Noises from the front

You are correct; one can always improvise. Without knowing your skill level and abilities, I always advise the most simplistic options. GM special tools are often available on eBay. The Spring compressor might be tough to find though. In that case, I would fab my own. CC

    Noises from the front

You are in a bad situation. With few viable options, it would appear a road trip is in your future to the nearest European GM service center if you want this problem fixed.

    Noises from the front

Your local GM dealer should be able to help you get the bushings replaced. For your headlight issue, you probably need to replace the grey butyl rubber seal that secures the clear bezel to the lamp housing. More info on how to do it here...

    Noises from the front

It's in GM's best interest to not add steps to procedures that aren't absolutely necessary. Time is money and removing/installing components often carries a risk of damage (especially with composite transverse springs.) The front wheels are removed, followed by the transverse spring, front...

Help! 2008 Cadillac XLR-V Hardtop Retraction / Trunk Struggle to Open?

Both the Tender and Minder work great, and are microprocessor-controlled, unlike cheap trickle chargers. The (advertised) difference is the Minder pulses the plates with current once the battery is charged to prevent sulphur build-up. (Their site explains the benefits in great detail.) At...

Help! Battery dead and useless after 19 months

If the duckbill end of the drainage tube looks like that, lop it off, or remove the tube altogether; the goal is to be able to see light through the drain hole when viewed from above. The small ends easily get covered with road grime and plug up, leading to very expensive repairs if water seeps...

    Distance Sensing Control Module...HELP

Ouch! At close to 10% of the value of the vehicle on the used market, that's pretty steep. Without a donor part to take apart and examine the innards, there's no way to tell what parts are serviceable; especially when schematics and benchtop test procedures aren't available. The XLR-V...

New style key fob. Sway bar. Tender. Shock Simulators

Would it be possible for you to take a resistance measurement across the contacts of one of the sensors? Thanks, CC

Help! 2008 Cadillac XLR-V Hardtop Retraction / Trunk Struggle to Open?

If more than one part of the top is having difficulty, it's most likely something in common with all of them. The first suspect is always the battery. If in doubt, have it load-tested. Any auto parts store should be able to do this for you. Troubleshooting the top remotely is difficult...

Help! 2008 Cadillac XLR-V Hardtop Retraction / Trunk Struggle to Open?

There are two, smaller pneumatic "assist" cylinders forward of the two hydraulic lift cylinders on the sides, covered for the most part by the rat fur trunk liner. When either one (or both) of these fail, the hydraulic system struggles to lift the rear deck lid. You can replace these yourself...

Help! Fuel Injection cleaner for 2004 XLR

GM recommends Chevron Techron Fuel Injector Cleaner, which has the added benefit of reducing sulphur deposits on the fuel sender units that signal fuel tank levels.

2004 XLR FOLDING TOP POSITION SENSOR KNOWN GOOD "COUNTS" - TROUBLESHOOTING

If you're planning to install a resistor in place of the thermistor (these are very different components) I don't recommend it. (First Rule of repairs: DO NO HARM.) I have disassembled the pump from the manifold, and removed the impeller housing, isolating the pump motor. I started writing...

2004 XLR FOLDING TOP POSITION SENSOR KNOWN GOOD "COUNTS" - TROUBLESHOOTING

Installing a resistor bypasses the protection the thermistor is designed to give, and I wouldn't recommend it. That would be in the same league as bypassing a fuse with a piece of wire. The short answer is, Don't. If the pumps weren't susceptible to damage, the thermistors wouldn't have been...

    Reconditioning/Remanufacturing Hard-Sourced Parts

I feel your pain. Too bad we can't get a schematic of the interior of the modules for repair purposes. . . To avoid any confusion, there's no such thing as a hydraulic control module. The folding top's hydraulics are controlled by the Folding Top Control module, which you've already...

2004 XLR FOLDING TOP POSITION SENSOR KNOWN GOOD "COUNTS" - TROUBLESHOOTING

The grey and tan wires are the pump thermistor outputs. Someone tried to bypass the thermistor by tying them together outside the pump. I see two splices on the line with what looks like a smaller gauge wire between them. Can't tell if there's a really low-wattage resistor in there under the...
