Well 3-4 years ago i ran across several v owners looking for power steering pumps and pulleys. so i spent time and a good bit if money to come up with a reasonable repair. Ive had good sucess and been able to help about 60 owners get their cars back running. My costs kept going up and up but i held my price until i really made nothing for my time. I was just getting ready to make another run of parts and found my source for pumps has dryed up. There are no more pumps. What was costing me 300 now cost me 500 and i got the last four anywhere. Ive spent the last year looking for someone that can make the pump shaft so the old pumps could be rebuilt. thats not going to happen unless i can find someone in japan or china to do it.i got quotes of 1000$ here and thats if i order 100. So thats off the table. Im working on other ideas but all are going to require me to have a test car. ive looked and just missed a wrecked v. i dont care about mileage or condition. Just needs to run. If anyone runs across one please let me know. Otherwise ill have to wait till another pump goes out and the owner decides to get rid of the car. I am open to ideas. My best bet is to adapt an electric pump but with variable assist on the car thats going to take some serious electronic ability i dont have. I welcome help and ideas. As far as failure there is no real way to tell if its going out until it does. ive sold to people with 20,000 mile failures and some went 200,000 and still looked good. Id look at the belt and watch to see if it flutters when you race the engine. The lower hydraulic tensioner does go bad and i think thats the start of the failure. All the ones ive done i include a rebuild on the tensioner. looking forward to helpful input
