I need your help.

I had trouble putting my top down. The button is either up or down, I get that. I had put the top down and up a couple of days ago but today after I washed the car I wanted to put the top down and go for a little ride. The down button raised the trunk lid but nothing else. I pushed the up button to close the trunk and nothing happened. I then tried to put the top down and it went down. Then I tried to put the top up and nothing happened. I don't know what else to try.
Any suggestions?

was the car running when you tried to operate the top?
i have washed my car, and after opening and closing doors a dozen times, 2 hrs later my battery was nearly dead.
always operate the top with the car running.
also check the trunk for water, did any water get inside the driver side rear compartment where the roof hydraulic system and electronic module live ?
its under the carpet drivers side rear of trunk area.

Thanks - I appreciate

Thanks for your reply.
I have always put the top up or down with the engine running. I put the car in the garage overnight and went into the house to try to find out what happened and that's when I did my posting. I read the owners manual and saw something to try but it was too late. This morning armed with ideas I pulled the car out of the garage and tried the top again and, it worked just like it was supposed to work. I guess my girl (car) didn't like it when I put the top down after washing her.
I'll keep your suggestions as I'm sure this will happen again!

Generally this is an indication of one of your count switches going bad or loose. I would definitely check your trunk divider that it was properlly engaged. Occasionally a relearn with a Tech 11 will cure your ills. I definitely would go threw the manual top up down procedure in case this happens to you in a vulnerable situation.

I had an issue with the top not working properly after the trunk was accidentally left open one night.

With a 2004 I'm guessing these are now getting old enough that most could use a top calibration to adjust for the age of the sensors.

I did 2 calibrations and haven't had a problem since.

Also, everyone should learn to do the manual top dance. It's not that easy the first or second or third or forth time.

It would stink to have it down in a rain and have to spend an hour trying to figure it out. In the rain. As your interior gets soaked.

I'll ask my mechanic about re-calibrating the top and I'll take your advice and learn how to put up the top manually.

A Tech II is the hardware device used to interface with the electronics on older GM cars.

It has a menu in it a repair person can go into and recalibrate the sensor settings on the top. It also helps in diagnostics and repair of anything that touches one of the many electronic modules in the car.

If you go to a GM dealership they will have one. Some non-GM repair shops may have them, but unless they have an actual Tech II the device they may have for diagnostics won't be able to do a top recalibration.

A few people here have them also, there are Chinese clones of the Tech II available, that's what I bought.

Is a Tech II a Cadillac mechanic?

thanks

Thanks for the education. I'll ask my mechanic if he has one.
