Notice how no one mentioned range?

Jay Leno hates our cars with an X in the name :)

ELR

I liked the video. Cannot wait to see the car in person. I like the styling, it is the first car I have seen in some time that could possibly be a replacement and or addition to my XLR. Jay's comment about the X cars is interesting. I believe he owned an XLR at one time.

I saw a clip on the ELR - it indicated about 325 miles full range (about 35 miles all-electric range, balance including the small engine - charging the battery while running). Not a very big range for an electric car. I saw that they are calling it a "hybrid" - I think because of the engine in it, but like the Volt, doesn't the engine only charge the battery?

Like the Volt (whose chassis it shares) it's a PHEV (Plugin Hybrid). It and the Volt don't use the engine to directly drive the wheels, but the engine can provide some power to drive some gear that ultimately contributes energy to the drivetrain. So, it doesn't move the car itself, but it also doesn't just generate electricity either. A point GM likes to avoid talking about extensively (or, extensively likes to avoid talking about).

A whole lot of my driving would be within a 35-mile electric-only range. And after spending a week in a 2013 SRX, I could really go for a vehicle with the blind spot and lane departure warnings, a really good rear view camera, a really good front and rear distance-to-something display, etc. Getting back into the XLR after a week+ of the SRX and immediately listening to the interior panels creak and scritch didn't help.
