Gas Tank Problems

My fuel gauge was working but it would go on and off . Now it doesn't work at all. Brought it to my mechanic and he tells me its a big job requiring dropping the tanks , checking the two pumps and replacing the fuel sensor. It will cost in excess of $1800. Has anyone found a better way of fixing this problem ????
