Hi All,
I replaced my front run-flats last year with Sumitomo HTR Z III (Max Performance Summer) tires. Was so happy with the tread wear and performance that I recently replaced the backs too. The price of the tire has gone up a bit since 2010, but still quite reasonable- $166/tire at Tirerack.com ($100/tire cheaper than the runflats!).
My set of 2 tires mounted and balanced was about $400 (including tax, etc) here in San Diego at TireDepot. I highly recommend these as an alternative to the Michelin Pilot HXs. Great grip, smooth ride, decent longevity.
I drove a 1990 Miata with no spare tire for 10 years (hey- the trunk was WAY too small with it in there)...and luckily never had a flat. Never had a flat in my Honda S2000 either (but that car chewed through rear tires every 12k miles....which got pretty expensive).
