I have a 2006 infrared that i just bought. The cup holder casing is a little tricky and you have to lift up and over to close. mine is a little awkward in i think its a little loose and when i go to close it i am afraid it might break. Is this something that all XLRs are known for?
My '06 (also an infrared like yours) does the exact same thing - even after it was taken all apart for a tranny cable repair. It's annoying & I usually feel stupid having to keep working it back & forth, but is not a big enough deal to figure out a fix. Also I don't use the cup holders enough to bother with it.
My 06' does not have this issue it opens and closes in one smooth action. Maybe over use or improper use from the previous owners caused it to become loose.
I have the same problem as well, but it can be fixed.
There is a bundle of wiring that runs right under where the door rests when its open... if the bundle of wire has been jarred out of place it will interfere with the operation of the door.
The fix is simple - just remove the shift knob and lift the trim panel and tuck the wires against the side of the console and away from the cupholders. You may want to put a peice of duct-tape or something to keep it in place before replacing the trim piece.
Once the wiring is moved out of the way the door should work smoothly again.
I run into this problem here or there when I take the console apart to do some work.
Thanks for the description of what to look for. I'll try it on mine, as soon as I can figure out how to get that trim piece on the shift knob to move.
The console door on mine works fine until it's about 90% open, then it stops. I can relatively easily move it completely open, during which motion it goes UP and "clunks" into an open and sort of locked position. When I complained to the dealer about this "wart on the glamor", he said that he had "looked into it" and that it was broken inside and he wasn't going to fix it because it would cost him too much for a new console. I could have walked away from buying it, but it wasn't that bad, so I am living with it.

It sounds like I have the opposite problem of everyone else - mine is fine until its 90% closed, then it hangs. Probably the same cause though (wires). Or maybe caused by the coffee pot the prior owner apparently had explode in the car, based on what I cleaned up under & beside the driver's seat.
