Hi All,
I've been tempted to get the Corsa exhaust based on all the rave reviews on the XLR-Net forum boards, but not sure I'm willing to fork over the $ for it.
Was looking for some cheaper alternatives and stumbled across this exhaust made by SLP
www.slponline.com/view_product_site.asp?P=31076A&BIG=31076A-1

It's only $699 (1/2 the price of the Corsa!), and has a very cool, custom-looking tip. I looked the measurements to see if it would fit- and it seems like it should. However, I e-mailed SLP, and they couldn't confirm that it will fit on a 2005 XLR.

What's cool is you can purchase just the tip for $299:

Aside from buying the Corsa, Magnaflow, etc....are there cheaper ways to make the car louder (without the drone) and still pass CA emissions?
I'm sure you "get what you pay for", but just curious as to what other options are out there.
Thanks,
Mark

I sat down with SLP marketing director a couple weeks ago and actually got to inspect some of their exhaust systems/components. (I was looking at purchasing this exhaust tip:

)

My conclusions - cast aluminum isn't nearly as durable as stainless steel; it doesn't polish as well; my EGTs will blue these tips quickly and no amount of polish will restore them; lastly, SLP systems are axle-back only, as opposed to the Corsa's Cat-back system.

As mentioned above its half the system compared to the Corsa, so it should be half the cost. Keep in mind also, Corsa's are fully tuned for the motor and the vehicle, all components are 304 stainless steel, and comes with a lifetime warranty. Going cheap tends to lead to other costs.

I have Corsa's on two of my other vehicles and love them. They're worth every cent. But as usual my tastes are extreme. I'm saving my pennies for a complete custom exhaust system starting with D3 headers, 3" MagnaFlow X-Pipe and exhaust pipes, culminating int a set of Billy Boat Fusion mufflers and tips (total w/install ~$4200). After hearing the Billy Boats on a blown C6, I fell in love!

My cheapo solution (which I'm VERY happy with) was to buy a used XLR-V Exhaust online. I then added the controller from Sunset Orange Creations. I can change the exhaust from "mild to wild" with either the remote or the "RESET" button on the DIC. It works great, has a great sound, and I can make it quiet if I choose. And no drone at high speeds either, and it's a factory finish. it looks great (and it fit perfectly - I just replaced from the muffers back, and it took no time at all).

Just to add my two cents on the matter. Slp is a great performance brand for GM cars. I saw this tip when I was doing my exhaust and the only problem is the inlet are pointed in the wrong direction which will give the exhaust to many sharp bends which arn't good for flow. I had hooker super comps. On two of my cars and loved it. I researched the noise level comparison and magna, Corsa, flow master all had higher readings through out the rpm range. I purchased the mufflers then I took the stock 2 1/2 h pipe which is large enough for a 4.6 and had ceramic coated which keeps the heat in the pipe and it allows the exhaust gases to flow better then I took the axle pipe cut the old muffs off welded my new ones then had them also ceramic coated. Everything is a chrome silver color and will never peel crack or loose color. The problem I see with thecorsa and other stainless models is their stainless which holds heat like 3-4 times longer than steel. That's no good. My car doesn't have any droning and have had multiple comments on how she sounds and there from car fanatics. I think people follow the masses and are misinformed ALOT but to each his own.
Here's a couple picks of the tips I installed I'm not 100% on them would like something to fit the exact shape of the valance. Anyways do some looking around first looks like your on the right track

Thanks everyone for your feedback...some interesting comments.

GizmoQ - wow, I LOVE the exhaust tip photo you posted. Looks very close to the 2009 XLR tip. Is it currently for sale or just a prototype? Will it fit 2004-2008 XLRs? I'm not so concerned if it's not super shiny and doesn't polish well. If my car had 540hp, I'd be more willing to spend ~$4200 on my exhaust too (or at least $1600 for the Corsa)

HOMEGAMEROOM- hadn't thought of buying a used XLR-V exhaust. Is it that much louder than a standard XLR? Do you mind me asking what you paid for it?

Stella- thanks for the confirmation that SLP makes some good quality products :)

If your just looking for a louder exhaust try any stock vette exhaust 06 and above. Before I did my exhaust setup I had found a guy on craigslist selling his stock cat back system for 40 bucks. It's EXACTLY the same except from the muffler to the tips is like two inches shorter. I had put the axle back set up on and it did have a louder idle and definitely at wot. I figured if I was gonna do a exhaust that I wanted a little bit more so I did my own. But the vette 06 above is and almost looks exactly the same not surprise since their the same chassis and the reason for the shorter tip pipe is the short rear bumper area on the vette.

Can you say Hack Saw?? My autocross coach has these on her Z06, basically cut the tips straight across the back side and you're left with two gaping huge ovals, a little custom welding to the existing muffler pipe and Viola!

Yes they are still for sale. SLP Part #310325261 in their PDF Catalog, but its nowhere to be found on their online store, so I assume they have none in stock. Other online retailers have them listed for sale from $269 to 449, but whether they have them in stock is another matter. I've backed our cars up together to see how close a fit it would be and its close but the angle of the arc doesn't match our bumper.

The V exhaust is easy to hear- just have someone with a V and a "mild to wild" switch installed and you'll get a sample of the sound. I bought it on eBay for around $200 and bought the Sunset Orange controller for a couple hundred as well. I do enjoy switching from quiet to loud. Well, not as loud as Gizmo, but louder than stock! :D

Hmmmm.... "the angle of the arc doesn't match our bumper"....ok, sounds like the SLP tip is not worth it then- could look really bad.

I'm very interested in the idea of just buying a XLR-V or C6 Vette exhaust and swapping out.
Which of the 2 is louder/sounds better? Does the change in exhaust flow set off the check engine light?

I probably wouldn't mess with installing the
"mild to wild" switch....would just be a bit more judicious with the accelerator when wanting to drive around quietly.

Do I need to go "catback" or does simply swapping the mufflers and tips make enough of a difference?

I didn't see any XLR-V exhausts listed on eBay or Craig's List.

Some of the C6 Vette exhausts:

2007 CORVETTE Exhaust System Mufflers OEM Kit C6 Z51 Muffler Catback #2375 stock | eBay

I thinking the Z51 or Z06 might sound the best? :dunno:

I absolutely love the sound of the v exhaust. you don't have to be judicious with the throttle either, it only opens around 3500 rpm. You have a hard time even getting it to open up, other than wfo! I have considered the mild to wild switch but so far haven't went for it. can't comment on the vette exhaust haven't been around them much.

I really like having the mild- to -wild and run most of the time on the more open tubes. Drive thrus, or top up times or sneaking thru a subdivision at 2AM is quiet time. Being able to choose is good!

I only swapped out the mufflers on mine (with the V mufflers). Everything fit perfectly.
