Does anyone know if there is a way to check what the problem is when the engine icon shows up other than going to a dealer and paying $125. I have my 2005 XLR and i love it. A friend has a corvette and he can do something with his information center and it tells him what the problem is. Can it be done with my XLR that way?:dunno:

While the best way to determine the issue with your engine light is to take it to a trusted garage with a Tech II, but Autozone does have the ability to read some codes. The place to plug in the code reader is directly under the steering wheel. It has been posted on this forum many times that a loose gas cap is a very common issue that can cause this issue. It may several trips to clear after the issue is resolved. If it is anything other than a gas cap or oxygen sensor, you would be best to take it to your Cadillac Dealer to properly diagnose and repair your issue. There are several codes and systems that only a Tech II can test and diagnose and other scanners will not detect. Five most common reasons for the check engine light.

code reader at autozone

If you go to autozone to have your code read you will have to have the engine running for the code reader to link to the computer. I found this out after having the same kind of problem myself and the guy at autozone did not know either.
