My xlr heads up display just fell apart while driving down the road. The reflector looks like it just fell into the housing. A week later it flipped back into place but no longer lights up, so I need to replace it. Has anyone done one and have any helpful hints? Is there a video anywhere? Thanks!
Have you check the switch on the LH side of the dash, have you try to get the screen up and down to see the HUD reaction.
Changing the HUD is not like changing a bulb, first get your self a workshop manual and read the steps of how to do the replacement of it.
After getting well inform and still want to go forward and have the ability of doing it, that could be an economical way to do the fix.
On internet there are some HUD presently available however make sure the one you could buy is from low a mileage car in order not to repeat the repair again.
Removing parts around the steering wheel needs cares as there is so many components to be remove, also the power will have to be cut in order to prevent the air bag to open, as you can see….. care is required.
If you take photos it would be fine for you for references when putting it to together and also it would be great to let us know your repair with a Threads of your own and inform other XLR owners.
Good luck and welcome to this site

Suggested only…... a paper one is of much more expensive, this one is acceptable for me.
Thanks for the reply. This HUD physically fell apart, leaving the film cover on the dash transparent. I can look in throught the windshield and see the reflector lying on the bottom of the housing. I couldn't believe that it just fell apart.
My concern is breaking off the clips that hold on the mouldings. I'm very familiar with German vehicles and know how much force that I can get away with removing things. I'm just not sure about this old caddy.
I'm going to give it a shot. I just thought that someone might have had a few things to watch out for. Thanks
Enclosed is a drawing and it explodes the components of the HUD parts, that could help you to understand were the items are located.
The HUD is secure with a nut on LH and RH of the dash, and at the lower portion, it is anchorage by a clip, the electrical connector is also at the central front portion of the unit.
Still suggest a work shop manual to simply your experience in changing the ruined HUD of your XLR.
Yesterday a link was suggested by rexster for a 2008 HUB, visit the eBay site and open/zoom the many photos that could help you to understand the HUD fixation.
Thanks for the response! I have the replacement unit. I stayed with an 04 unit only because the later units were color, or something. and I didn't know what else might be different.
I'll let you know how it turns out. Thanks again!
1) Raise and stow the top. 2) Disable the SIR by pulling the appropriate fuse. 3) The center console trim plate is pressed against the center stack trim plate at the bottom, and must be moved out of the way. Use a plastic trim removal tool to gently pry the trim plate upwards, starting at both rear sides and move forward. If it can’t be moved far enough away, remove the trim ring below the shift knob by sliding it downwards. Loosen the T-15 Torx set screw and lift the shift knob upwards. The trim plate can be lifted upwards to clear the center stack trim plate. 4) Remove the center stack trim plate using a plastic trim removal tool. Like the console trim plate, it is secured with clips located on the outside edge. Disconnect the hazard light switch at the connector. 5) Remove the Driver’s Side Knee Bolster: It’s located just below the steering wheel column. There are two fasteners on the bottom and clips at the bottom and top corners. Once the fasteners are removed, pull the knee bolster straight out. Remove the gas cap cover and rear deck lid release switches at their connector. 6) Remove the DIC switches: First remove the driver’s side closeout panel below the knee bolter. Pry the IP courtesy lamp assembly out with a plastic trim tool. There are a couple of push pins holding the panel in place. Remove the retaining screws from the bottom of the DIC switch housing, pull out to disengage the retaining clip and disconnect the connector. 7) Remove the dimmer/HUD switches: Basically a repeat of the DIC switch removal. 8) Remove the windshield Side Garnish Moldings: These are easy. Just grasp them with your hands and pull straight out. 9) Remove the Instrument Panel side trim panels. 10) Remove the four retaining screws from the upper dash pad. The screws are located at each end, in the center of the Instrument Panel and behind the DIC switch cavity. 11) Pull upwards on the dash pad to disengage the retaining clips. 12) Disconnect the sunload/twilight sentinel sensor from the dash pad. 13) Have a beer or two. 14) Reverse the removal procedure from steps 12 to 1 to install the new dash pad. 15) Have a few more beers, toasting me with each new beer.
Wish I had that pic when I pull my dash panel out first time. Word of warning, don’t drop the sun load sensor down into the dash. It’s a PITA to get back out, like having to pull the instrument cluster.....
Really not that hard of a job once you do it once.
