Not sure, I think you have to have TIS software on the laptop and connect using a Tech II in between car and laptop. You'll still have to get a proper cable {obd to USB or serial} . Easier to get a TechII.
 
What you are referring to is the replacement for the Tech2 called the MDI... it has a mode where it soft-emulates a Tech2 on screen... the entire MDI is essentially PC software, but you need a GM service account to make it work...

For $400, getting a chinese knock-off Tech2 is a pretty good deal... IMO

MDI, that's what I was trying to remember when I wrote my response. Last time I looked that service account is not cheap. Last time I took my XLR to David Taylor, they used the old TechII, not the laptop
