Unless you haven't been paying attention, you all know that a water leak into the trunk plus a blocked drain in the left-hand equipment well can be a serious and expensive problem. While some cars have a hole and tube drain arrangement, mine comes with only a very small hole. To make things worse, it was already clogged with carpet fuzz. I decided to add a backup drain in case the original drain gets clogged.
I used 1 foot (well, really only 6-7") of 1/2 inch OD polyethylene tubing purchased at Lowes for 28 cents. I cut a couple of v-shaped notches in the end and also drilled a couple of 1/4 inch holes through it so water has more than one way out.
Pull back the carpet, and remove the oddly-fitting cover. Clean out any debris. Work out where you can drill a 1/2 inch hole near the bottom without hitting equipment. Note the junk in the picture alongside the tube was stuff that I found hidden out of sight in the front left corner of the well, so even if all you choose to do is check the well, be sure to check for hidden debris.
Insert the tube, position as desired, and add a little bit of sealant around the hole just to make sure it stays in place.
