Shift Lock Solenoid

I am a new member and a new 2004 XLR owner. I went through a car wash yesterday and they washed the underside of the car. Needless to say a few problems quickly arose. First, the transmission did not shift properly. Second, the car would start without pressing on the brake. Third, the brake light would go on when the brake pedal was depressed, then go off when I let off the brake and would go on by itself again. I also had trouble getting the car out of park.

Is there a solenoid on the transmission that could be affected? Could the shift lock solenoid be bad as a coincidence? Help! I need to wash the car by hand from now on.

let me just say that i went through a car wash a couple months ago. When you enter your wheels stop when they hit the partition. then when you drive through, the car seems to bottom out and hit those grates or bumpers. So i have tried not to take it in to those gas station car washes just for that reason. I sometimes get mine washed by a mobile "hand car wash" service that comes out to the house. I get the car professionally detailed 2 x a yr. on a different note, I even try and stay away or go slow when i see those nasty speed bumps or man hole covers on the road. Someone here even said they back into a parking space because of the curbs. After some try s you'll get familiar more and more with these cars of ours.

It is normal to have to depress the brake for starting.
The shift lock solenoid is in the center console. I doubt it got wet. Also I expect if there was a problem there it would be impossible to shift not harder to do.

The electrical systems are very much interconnected and a problem in one are may appear in others acting up. If it were me I would start by cleaning the ground points.

The common theme in most of the problems you've listed is the brake pedal in conjunction with the shift lock solenoid, but more symptom elaboration is needed to assess what ails your car.

1. Transmission not shifting properly. Please describe. Park to Drive? 3rd to 4th? Upshifting, downshifting?
2. Ignition sequence completing without applying the brake. Consistently? Occasionally? Still doing it?
3. Brake light illumination. Same questions as #2.
4. How did you ultimately get the car out of Park? Jiggling the shift lever? Pumping the brake pedal? Is it still doing this?

The more info you are able to describe, the easier it is for someone to make a diagnosis, whether it's here or at a dealership.

Probably a bit late, but I would never take my XLR through a car wash. In fact, my XLR has never been washed any way other than a careful hand wash.

These cars are gems and deserve to be treated as such!

Yeah that's what I do. I only have taken her through once. After I hit the stopper and scrapped I haven't been back unless at the dealerships. After services they wash it up. But haven't seen what the inside of their washroom is like

Open the trunk and check u nder the carpet on the left (drivers side) there is a cover that is over the hydrolic pump. there is a computer there and a mess of connections. Make sure there isnt any water in that compartment. Check all of the connections to be sure they are all tight.

I had several problems shiftIng, stabilalock,traction control, radar/cruise control, all not working or DIC messages popping up. All due to the connections in that compartment. The car would slam into gear, more so down shifting. The lock symbel in the dash would be lite along with what looks like a round gear.

Once I secured all od the wires and connections my problems, DIC messages, and warning lights went away. At one time that pump was replaced and who ever did the job didnt resecure those wires and they would jiggle around while driving and cause my problems.
