Other than the Lloyd Floor Mats, this is my first "upgrade" on this 20 year old car.
When I bought the '05 XLR, it did not have a physical / door key... only one key fob. These old '04-'07 BVLGARI / Bulgari key fobs are not only difficult to find, but very expensive for one in good condition. I not only need a real key, but I like the newer '08-'09 style key fob... especially since it matches my 2012 Escalade key fob.
Went to the dealership, gave them my VIN and proof of ownership, they cut me a new key. However, I didn't get a deal on that one... they charged me $85! That was more than I paid for the new '08-'09 key fob.
Any way, programming is easy (now that I have a physical key).... just find any video on the programming procedure for C6 Corvette. Just be sure to do two things:
1) if you use the physical key that goes into the new key fob to program it, be sure to tape around the bumper key hole to avoid scratching your paint
2) when turning the key 5 times, go slow and turn the key a complete 90 degrees
If you're curious, the "panic button" on the new fob does not work on my '05. I suspect that if I get the BCM re-flashed with the latest, it might work... but I'm not one to panic ;-)
What key fob to buy? It must be 315 MHz and it must have the ID 46 Transponder Chip. I'm not positive the FCC numbers have to match, but I believe these are good FCC numbers: M3N5WY7777A, M3N65981401, M3N65981403.
Want GM key fobs? These are the latest part numbers I know about (there are older versions): 25926473 (Driver 1), 25926474 (Driver 2)
Want to buy me a new key fob... I'm happy to sell my beat up original
