The Official Cadillac XLR Registry is Now Complete

After many years of work, I’m pleased to announce that the Cadillac XLR Registry here on the XLR Net is now complete.

All Cadillac XLRs built are now in the Registry along with VINs and production codes. For the 2008 and 2009 Cadillac XLRs, most of them have copies of the original invoices with the pricing.

Unfortunately, GM removed the invoice information on 2007 and older vehicles. Shortly after I finished the Registry, they removed invoice information for vehicles built up to 2013.

I’ve also continued to refine the search functionality as well. You can now search for XLRs that were built for export to Saudi Arabia and parts of the Middle East.

I have some additional work and refinements to do, but I’m really psyched that it’s finally done.

I have also included the last 10 XLRs updated in the Registry on the index page. So….if you’re looking for an XLR for sale, that would be a good place to start!

I will continue to update owner information and XLRs for sale on a daily basis.

NHTSA Closes Cadillac XLR Roof Separation Investigation

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has officially closed the Cadillac XLR retractable roof investigation without finding enough reason to issue a recall.

In February 2019, the NHTSA opened an investigation after receiving complaints from owners that the roof panel layers on the XLR separate due to a weakness in the adhesive bonding used in the structure.

The outer roof panel is made of sheet molded composite and attached to the magnesium roof structure using a special adhesive. General Motors told the NHTSA that there is an oxide layer that isn’t supposed to be on the magnesium framework that caused eight roof panel separations.

Some owners have reported the separation occurring while the vehicle has either been sitting or driving at highway speeds.

The NHTSA says the investigation is now closed due to the low failure rate and the sporadic nature of the issue.

Several of our members here at the XLR Net, have experienced roof panel delamination on their XLRs but most of the cases appear to common in the 2005 model year.

Owner’s 2008 Cadillac XLR-V Mistakenly Towed and Stored Outdoors for 6 Months

Rod Ghorashi-Zadeh a car collector and owner of a 2008 Cadillac XLR-V is suing the EasyPark storage facility and Busters Towing for mistakenly towing his XLR-V from the storage facility and storing it outdoors for 6-months.

Ghorashi-Zadeh filed a notice of civil claim in BC Supreme Court on September 4, naming Parking Corp. of Vancouver dba Easypark and All Tech Transport Ltd. dba Busters Towing as defendants.

According to Ghorashi-Zadeh, his 2008 XLR-V is only one of 20 made that year and it “was in immaculate condition – it looked and smelled new. It had never been driven in the rain.”

In April of 2015, he began storing his XLR-V at the EasyPark storage facility in Vancouver, British Columbia where he took comfort in knowing that his prized Cadillac was safe behind gates and surveillance cameras. However in September 2017, that all came to an end.

Ghorashi-Zadeh received a call from Busters Towing stating that his XLR-V had been towed from the storage facility six months earlier and stored outside on the towing company’s lot where it would be auctioned off if he didn’t come by and pay the $6,500 towing bill for keeping it on their lot.

An employee of EasyPark told Ghorashi-Zadeh that he didn’t know why his vehicle was towed from the storage facility as his account was in good standing. In the claim, he says that so far he has not received a valid reason from EasyPark as to why his Cadillac was towed without his knowledge.

When Ghorashi-Zadeh showed up at the towing company, he found his XLR-V sitting in the lot “badly damaged” with a broken headlight and a rat’s nest inside the engine compartment.

In November 2017, he had the XLR-V towed to a local Cadillac dealer at his own expense and the costly repairs to the car were only partially covered by his insurance company.

Ghorashi-Zadeh is seeking unspecified damages for breach of contract and negligence.

NHTSA Investigates Reports of Cadillac XLR Roof Separation

On February 1st, the NHTSA opened an investigation into 10 documented reports of outer roof panel separation on the 2004 – 2005 Cadillac XLR.

Below are the current details of that investigation:

Date Investigation Opened: FEB 01, 2019
Date Investigation Closed: Open
NHTSA Action Number: PE19001
Component(s): STRUCTURE

T he Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received ten reports of the outer roof panel separating from the roof frame on model years (MY) 2004 and 2005 General Motors (GM) Cadillac XLR. This condition is attributed to the degradation of the panel adhesive used in production to secure the outer roof panel to the inner retractable top frame. Seven of the complaints report outer roof panel separations while driving. A Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency, circumstances, and safety consequences of the alleged defect. The ODI complaints cited above can be viewed at www.nhtsa.gov under the following ODI identification numbers: 11173362, 11155574, 11101657, 11074433, 11012176, 11012166, 10985013, 10970736, 10970383, 10653304

On February 7th, a letter was sent to General Motors outlining the intent and details of this investigation. Attached below is a copy of that letter:

Roof Skin Separation

Last month, we reported an owner of a 2005 Cadillac XLR experienced the outer skin of the roof on their 2005 Cadillac XLR flying off while driving and in June of last year, we reported another owner of a 2005 Cadillac XLR losing the outer skin of her roof while driving as well.

Last month, we started a thread in our forums asking owners to report if they had experienced problems with roof separation on their XLRs as well. Below are their responses:

Another 2005 Cadillac XLR Loses Its Roof

In August of last year, we reported that a 2005 Cadillac XLR owner in Florida, was driving down a back road when the roof on her XLR flew off.

Last week, another 2005 Cadillac XLR owner in Tallahassee, Florida ran into the same problem as he was driving his XLR down Interstate-75 in Georgia.

Brad Yates, the XLR’s owner told First Coast News that the roof was completely sealed shut as he was driving. He had been driving for a few hours when he started to hear excessive road noise coming into the cabin and then a loud bang as the roof separated.

“Instantly, it was like all the windows were rolled down,” Yates said. “You never think that a structural component of the car is going to fly off while you’re driving down the road.”

Yates pulled the XLR over, pulled out his phone and began to inquire about the issue on Google. He was amazed to see how many complaints and posts had been made by owners with the same issue.

In August, after Francesca Giannini of Florida lost the roof on her 2005 XLR, First Coast News began an investigation into the issue and General Motors has begun to look into the situation as well. Last week, a spokesman for General Motors stated that the investigation is still ongoing.

“It’s not like I’m going to go search online, ‘Hey, will my roof fly off?'” Yates said. “I was going 70 miles an hour, you know, there may be someone tomorrow going 70 miles an hour and really cause a bad accident.”

The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration has recorded six other instances of Cadillac XLR roof delamination issues, however, no recalls have been issued thus far.
