I had a Cadillac Dealer cut me a new key for my lost 2004 xlr rear key cylinder lock. The new key cut from the vin code does not turn the lock?? The dealer is telling me they will need to replace the rear key cylinder at a cost of @ 1000$ They are telling me that the key code may be wrong??? I am asking for help as a new key is @ 8$. Has anyone had or seen this problume?? Thanks DP

Interesting that the key code would be wrong. I assume the key that you lost worked? You could take the car to a locksmith; he should be able to make a key by inserting "feelers" into the lock and measuring the tumblers and make a key for a LOT less than a grand.
Granted the rear bumper cover has to be removed to get to the cylinder, but I only show a flat rate of 2.3 hours to remove and re-install the bumper cover - the dealers shop rate is probably around $110/hr, so this would come to only $253 - where does the other $747 come in??? Your guess is as good as mine. Anyway, after the bumper cover is removed, the cylinder could then be removed and rekeyed to fit the key they made. I can't AT ALL understand a cost of $1000!!!!!
I would try a good locksmith in your area; if they can't make a key, go to a good collision repair shop to have the rear cover removed, the cylinder rekeyed and then the cover re-installed. After all, this is probably not going to be under any kind of warranty anyway.

Definitely a lock smith. They may not even have to remove the cylinder. Any chance the cylinder just needs lubricated? They are in the weather and need attention occasionally.

For $8.00, I believe that I would gamble and have a different Cadillac Dealer cut a key from the code and try it before going to a locksmith.

Good suggestion about using some "lock lubricant" as well before proceeding.

Good luck!

WOW 8 bucks to cut an XLR key!!!
I paid $35 just to look up the correct key from the VIN and then another $69 for the key and have it cut.
Did I get ripped off or is your dealer doing something wrong?
