Well, good news and bad news. It can be easily removed, but you'll have a hard time replacing the broken hinges. You have to buy a whole new top console assembly. If they're still in stock you're looking at 1200$ or so. You might find a used one on the wrecking yard network, or you might luck out like I did and find one on eBay. The hinges are flimsy plastic to begin with and any stress (like a small kid) put on the lid will break them all to pieces.

Great cars and people here. I haven't confronted this problem 'yet', but know that parts for these cars can be really challenging to come by on occasion. Probably doing a salvage yard search is going to be your best bet cost wise.
