Just bought a 2005 XLR and it started Dripping transmission fluid after the shift lever seal was replaced. The seal is intact. The leak is occurring on the front of the transmission and we thought that it was the pan gasket which was replaced and refilled and it still leaks. Seems like the leak is worse now. .
Question??? Does anyone know if there is a vent location that could be bleeding off an excess amount of transmission fluid in the front of the transmission. or could it be the drive shaft seal??

Has any one else observed this?

Any help would be very much appreciated.

So is the pan gasket still leaking? You have to fix the obvious first to narrow down where its coming from. I'm always suspect as to what was previously touch first, then proceed. :dunno:
There is the input shaft seal upfront. Vent tube would likely be on top somewhere. Let us know haven't heard of any being replaced.

Replacement Pan Gasket.

Thanks for your reply.

Replacement - Pan gasket not leaking. Lessons learned a long time ago. Check the obvious first. The seep is coming from somewhere in the front can't see anything up there.

Its either the drive shaft seal or ???

You sure it wasn't over filled and possibly is coming out an over flow tube?

Transmission Vent Tube

That is one of my thoughts. Do you know where the vent tube is located? Can anyone provide a picture or drawing of its location.

I can look later when by service manuals. I do know that the trans fluid should be checked after cycling through the gears. I believe it's suppose to be in gear when checking too. There is just the one fill location and as soon as it starts spilling out the fill hole it's full. Get back to you with vent location.

Transmission Vent location???

Thanks for the info.
I watched the mechanic refill the transmission after the pan was replaced (we also replaced the filter and cleaned the bottom of the pan magnet). He filled the transmission until it spilled out of the transmission then started the car and filled it until fluid then spilled out of the fill hole and let it drain until the fluid stopped. We used 5 1/2 quarts of DEXRON VI. He did not cycle through the gears! But I don't think that mattered.

Over night about 1 ounce of fluid dripped out on the garage floor. When I was changing Brake Rotors and Pads I crawled under the car to see where the leak was coming from. The pan was not leaking and the drip is in the front somewhere. I need to put it on the lift to get a better look. It would help if I knew where. I will check the shaft seal and other items that could be a potential leak source. I would like to get this done before my warranty on the work expires.

It's just a little weird that it starting leaking after the repair!

For the trans fill they say check at operating temp. Start the car cycle through the gears and place in park. Check level should be at fill hole level.
The trans vent is on top of the trans. It's towards the front on top though where the converter housing bolts to front of trans. There's two seals upfront one for converter and one for input shaft. There's a electrical seal frontside bottom driver side. Then shaft seal on both driver and passenger side. One side is gear shift other side is manual +/- shift linkage.
Either way if you have a warranty I would get it taken care of ASAP. If its in the front area I would think its gonna be a job. Looks like the converter needs to be removed to access the electrical connection? Is there fluid leakage above the pan area front side. Anywhere else would be dismissed right now if driving. Blown around. Need to clean thoroughly then start the search. Or just bring it in. :dunno:

Thanks Stella

Good answer -
Looks like I need to get it up on a rack - I just purchased a Android Borescope to help. I will let the forum know what I find. Probably next week unless it stops leaking.

Transmission fluid leak finally stopped!

The transmission leak stopped leaking after about 3 weeks of the drip. Couldn't find any traces of where it was coming from using the borescope. I think it was the vent at the top but could not verify. I think that the XLR was tilted slightly forward while on the rack which aided to the overflow condition. I rechecked the fluid level and is slightly below the filler plug when the engine is running in the jiffy lube pit.
I did replace the Shift Shaft seal again using the T1001-PV seal remover tool from EBAY which made removing the old seal easier.

Thanks everyone for all the help.
