Yes, I know that my true car geek is showing through.
Steve & I went to the Mecum auction yesterday and wandered through the acres and acres of tents looking at cars. I was really surprised to stumble upon this first year 1953 Corvette: I would have thought it would be in one of their 'fancier' tents but it was in a 'less than full' tent with no one watching over it. (the guy in the photo was just passing thru, I should have waited for him to move on)
As I said this was the first Corvette, they only built 300 of these cars and they are quite rare obviously. I felt like I was 'mingling with royalty' getting to closely scrutinize this amazing piece of American automotive history. I have seen one before, but this one was accessible for me to enjoy and buy. I should have sat in the drivers seat: when would I get that opportunity again? I resisted that as I can't afford to buy this car so I had no business doing that: HOWEVER: had I won the Superball, I would have bought it and YES - I would drive it too!
Just a cool old car. In 1953 they only came in Polo White (I believe only red interiors too) and the driver sits down so low and the body wraps around you: no wonder they referred to these as the Bathtub Corvette. Love it.
