Magnetic shocks on 2004 XLR?

As a newbie, how can I tell if there are any problems with the magnetic shocks on a 2004 XLR I am considering. Are problems illuminated on the onboard warning system? Thanks

Usually just the shocks leaking and loss of handling performance. It doesn’t matter if it is low mileage, it also seems time will allow the fluid to leak around the seals. Our 2004’s are now 15 years old. Look on Rockauto.com. Also many threads about replacing them with Corvette Bielstein or KYB shocks. It requires purchasing a plug in to fool the electronics, but a set of those cost less than 1 magnetic shock. Otherwise you get unwanted DIC warnings and it limits you to 80mph.

nerkpowers, Thanks for the prompt response and info. If I get no DIC warnings, can I assume that the magnetic shocks are still operating normally? Thanks One more question: if the shocks are leaking, is the leakage visible from under the car looking up at the shocks?

I don't believe the DIC will indicate anything wrong with the shocks. Only way to diagnose/test them is with a TECHII

Yes, you will see a dark gray grease type substance on them.

My thanks to all of you for the help with the shock issue. Glad to hear from people who know these cars.

Yes, you should be able to see from under, as long as they haven’t been wiped down. On mine, I noticed a lot more sway than typical loss of dampening. You won’t get any DIC messages unless you disconnect the control wiring at the top of the shock. The body control module is looking for a level of resistance. If it doesn’t see the circuit properly, it assumes there is an issue with the suspension and sends messages to the DIC. There are many issues that don’t show up on the DIC, but generate diagnostic codes that can only be read with a OBD II reader. Many articles on this site about Diagnostic Codes on this site. Doing a search for the issues on this site will give you much needed information.
