Service Ride Control & Top Not Secure messages

Looking for some guidance on messages on the DIT

Issue #1 – Service Ride Control
I had all 4 shocks replaced. The fronts were AC Delco 580-135 which did not include sensor. As a result, the Service Ride Control message is on the display. I read posts on other sites suggesting placing a terminating resistor on connecting leads would fool the computer that sensors were installed. This seems like the perfect solution.

Ideally I’d like buy on off the shelf assembly complete with resister and mating connector lead for computer. Does anyone know if such a thing exists and if so, a manufacturer and part # would be sincerely appreciated.

If nothing is available off the shelf, I’ll be relegated to making my own. Would anyone know the ohm and wattage rating of the resistor and perhaps a part# for the mating connector for the computer lead?

Issue #2 – Top Not Secure
When the top is closed randomly I’ll get these “Top Not Secure” messages when I hit a bump or rough patch of road. I may get 10-15 consecutive messages every 2-3 secs apart then nothing for a while, then get several more sporadically interspursed.

This has all the symptoms of failing mechanical switch or intermittent connection rather that a failed solid state sensor or electronic controller. I’m aware of the micro-switch located on the passage side where the top pins engage the frame. I hoping this is the source because it’ll be an easy and low-cost repair. Does anyone know the part#? Are there locations other switches/sensors that need to be engaged when the top is closed? I don’t think a Tech-2 would be helpful for diagnosing because the problem occurs randomly while the car is in motion. While the car is sitting the Top Not Secure message never appears.

Shocks and top

I haven't had that message in awhile. But all I do is cycle the top and also make sure the decider is pushed in to where it clicks.

Wow, I would not want to loose magnetic ride control by replacing the shocks with standard ones.

This was not a conscience decision to install fronts shocks without sensors and I personally did not service the vehicle. My Cadillac dealer provided me with the following part’s along with an estimate of $5360.74 to replace
2 x Front Shock part# GM19302790
1 x Rear Left part# 19302788
1 x Rear Right part #19302789

I found these AC Delco replacements and had my local service center that I’ve been using for the past 15yrs replace them for $3200. After all it’s only shocks.

The rear shocks have electronic connectors. I would have expected the same on the fronts. Unless there’s some other external sensor that’s not listed in GM front end suspension parts list.

I did find a set of plug-in resistor modules from Casper Electronics for a C6' vette (part # 109096). A set for for all 4 shocks is $175.95.
Specializing in automotive interconnect and wiring systems
I called their tech support and they felt fairly confident they'll work for XLR. I'll give them a shot and let you know how it goes.

I agree. Spending $4k-plus for shocks on a vehicle valued between $15 and $20k is a bit much. Welcome to the world of XLR parts and depreciation.

You didn't need to spend $4000 for new XLR/Corvette shocks. GMPARTSGIANT has them for $2283.12. Installation can be done cheaply.

For all of you new to XLR repairs: You don't have to pay the dealer mark-up (unless you want to.) The prices for the GM parts online are the same prices the dealer pays. Then they add another 40% and pass it on to you. Have the problem diagnosed, (preferably by a dealer's certified XLR tech) determine what parts are needed from the estimate sheet, (it usually includes the part numbers) buy them yourself and have the dealer install them. As a general rule, dealers won't warranty the parts you provide, just their labor, which is fine. The savings are worth it.

As for termination resistors, a one ohm, ten watt spliced into the connector harness should work. You can buy them for less than a tenth of the $179 price previously quoted at Radio Shack, Digi-Key, etc. (These are usually square, wire-wound resistors. The Corvette guys are using ten ohm, ten watt resistors but their expected resistance range is 9.5-15.5 ohms. The XLR Suspension Control module expects to see .5 to 2.0 ohms to drop the proper voltage. You'll need four resistors, one for each shock. In the best case scenario, you'll need to disconnect the battery to clear the previous codes. Worst case, you'll need a Tech 2 to clear all DTCs. I've heard both stories, so I'm including them,

If you don't want to splice into the harness, the cleanest (and best) way to do this is to buy a receptacle and install the resistor to the appropriate pin (A or B, resistors don't have polarity.) Tie-wrap the connector to the wiring harness to prevent it from flopping around.

The harness plug part number (not the receptacle on each shock) for each suspension damper is: 15305168. You'll need to do a cross match to determine the part number for the correct mating receptacle.

Personally, I'd stick with the OEM shocks since the XLR's suspension works in conjunction with them. They're expensive, but Magnetic Ride Control works well. For pure performance, a coil over system works really well too.

A sickening amount of connector info can be found here: GM Connector Service Information The 15305168 connector info can be found about 80% of the way down the page.
