Struts on he hood

Has anyone replaced the hood struts (keep the hood open). How difficult is this to do?

from earlier posts, replace both together, they are available at o'reilly etc.. and simple to replace. Prop the hood up (one wont hold it alone), pry off the clips at either end and then the struts pop right off.

The hood won`t stay open with one good strut, so you may have only one bad one. I have the same problem with my car. The bad strut, upper shaft is a little oily and there is some oil film on the lower shaft where the upper shaft enters the lower section. I bought 2 just incase. You need only the struts. No hardware is required. The strut is held in postion by a clip on both ball pins. Just pry them out with a pick and push back into place when mounted on the pins. Good luck. You will need to support the hood when removing the strut.

I replaced my Hood Struts a year ago with new ones from GM. I noticed this Spring that they already are losing their strength. An easy repair.

For shows I use a piece of slotted plastic tubing and slip it over one of the strut pistons to assure that the hood will not slam on anyone.

It also seems to help if you fully open the hood first.

Hood Struts

Thanks for the response.

Where did you purchase the new GM struts?
Did the new struts come with the clips that hold them on or did you have to use the old ones?

Just replaced mine (2 minute job) with struts from gmpartsdirect.co (note its not .com). They lasted a week. Trying to get them replaced now. They are not returning my emails. Looks like they are a "clone" site - faked me into thinking I was dealing with gmpartsdirect.com. Anybody else get tricked by this?

Richie,,,, I've bought from both of those places,,,but no hood struts for the XLR. Our's on the Cad haven't failed yet.

I'm sure if you contact either place, they will be happy to assist you with any questions you may have.

Good luck

Nalley Buick GMC in Brunswick, GA lists the strut as GM part #10446862. If you look around on the internet you will probably find the part cheaper, but I have found them to be a good source for GM part numbers.
