tire rotation

I need to take my car in for service soon. I have about 6k on the tires. What is the current thinking about rotating the tires. Do we or don't we. When I first bought it 6 years ago the dealer said no. But chatting with another owner he said he was told to rotate every 10 K..
Any thoughts?

Jim, you can & should rotate the tires on your XLR. 6,000 miles is a good time to rotate the tires. Your tires are the same size @ all 4 corners so you can rotate them this way;
Right front goes to the Left rear
Left front goes to the Right rear
Right rear goes to the Right front
Left rear goes to the Left front
This will help the tires wear evenly.

V cars can rotate tires this way;
Right rear goes to the Left rear
Left rear goes to the Right rear
Right front goes to the Left front
Left front goes to the Right front

What happen to the low tire pressure system when you rotate? Does it need to be reset? On my 2004 Corvette you could reset it by bringing up tire system on the DIC and use a magnet on each wheel to reset it.

It is best to reset the tire monitors after a tire rotation. The problem is that you will need a reset tool to do this. You can try and rotate the tires and see if you get a tire monitor message. You will then need to have the tire monitors reset.

The car does just about everything else and but it can't tell which tire is where?

It can after the reset procedure. It would be nice if they would have made them easier to reset.

Mine reset with a magnet - a lot easier than my Denali which requires releasing 10 psi of air out of each tire in a specified order...

I recently had this done with my Oil change at the Cadillac Dealer. They were running a special and that was part of it. Sure wouldnt hurt to call and ask if they would do it as a courtesy. If they want your continued business I will bet they make it part of the service.

With all the cars I've owned over the years, I've never rotated a tire. If your car is properly maintained (good shocks, air pressure and alignment) you should not have to rotate tires. If you are driving a high performance car with high performance tires, you shouldn't be running them much past 50-60% tread life anyway.

Your point is well taken on the Corvette you cant rotate tires and unfortunately you dont get a lot of miles out of them and the Cost$$$$.

My C6 went through three sets of tires in about 55,000 miles, but I figure tires are the price of great performance and safety.

The Shelby just received its third set, with 54,000 miles.

Both cars hit that mileage in 18 months, so that's a set of tires every 6 months.

I can relate to that I am running low profile tires on the Vette because of the rims increases the size to 18 front 19 rear I am lucky to get 20,000 miles out them.

But,,, I remember, in my youth, that radial tires are not to be changed in direction (one side to the other, front to back OK). Something about a wear pattern in the radials. Anyone else hear this?

My dealer said the same thing. No switching sides, only front to back.

Many years ago when radials were first being used, that was the case. The last 25-30 years it is not that way. You can switch sides if all 4 tires are the same size and non-directional. Check your owners manual under "tire inspection & rotation". It shows the proper way to rotate non-directional tires (which is the same as listed above).

When I read this post I went to the manual and sure enough you are correct ( which you always are)so I just had this done recently I decided to call the dealer and ask my service tech if it was done correctly he in turn transferred me to the Service Manager who assured me that it was done correctly I was just mis-informed at the service desk.Thanks for the post I would have never of thought to look at the manual.
