Help! Trunk wont open or close

Close call at the end; almost lost him

Excellent TOP DOG. I'll try it in the morning. The horror of my Cadillac Service Center went to an all time high this evening.

Last night, I stopped by to personally check on any resolution to the problem on the way home from work. The Service Rep advised me that the Tech had ordered a new "close" switch and it would be in the shop this morning. This was contrary of what I told them to both check and/or do, but I was given bad info that resulted in me making bad assumptions.

The Service Rep recanted on his previous story and said the Tech actually had only "cleared codes" and not re-flashed, and the failure codes had come back with "Bad Switch." I took it with a grain of salt and waited.

It didn't take long. By mid-day today, after the new switch had been installed, the system "malfunctioned." They were still working on it until closing.

Now the HORROR. While passing the Dealership this evening on the way home at 06:30pm (Service Center closed at 02:00), my wife noticed my XLR in the side lot with lights on. We circled around to go back and check and found our XLR in the side lot with the engine running, lights on and doors locked. I found the Sales Manager in his office (almost everyone else had gone home) and advised him of the finding, and with his help, I found my keys in the Service Center laying out in the open on the counter.

You can understand why my XLR is now back in my garage and I'm looking for another Dealership to work on it. We left with our XLR immediately. I'm glad to get the XLR back no matter the current condition. I will be having a few meetings with the Management of the Dealership when they come back to work on Monday.

The Well is Dry but the Drain was Plugged

b pappy,

Today I opened up the compartment housing the pump and Top Down Controller and found my drain tube had two broken off tabs in it. I fished them out and blew out the drain line.

The good news is that the compartment was bone-dry. There were no signs of water infiltration. Even the little flapper valve on the bottom was in pretty good shape.

Thanks for the heads-up thought. IF I ever have water get in, I now know it will drain properly.

On a side note, the XLR is operating properly by all exercising I've done with it today; trunk up/down & top up/down. I did notice the "TECH" (and I use that term loosely) left the emergency key access cover off when they left it running in the parking lot last night; I'm grateful it's theathered. I just stuck it back on and all is well for now.

Checking your left side trunkwell

All this discussion about water in the trunkwell convinced me that I should go ahead and check mine, even though my XLR has only ever been in the rain one time.

This first picture shows some interesting markings that were revealed when the trunk mat was pulled up to gain access to the trunkwell.

The second photo is a good shot of the left trunkwell with the cover removed.

The trunkwell was dry as a bone, and an inspection of the drain showed that the drain tube was clear and open. My tube has the "duckbill" style of drain tube.

Thanks for the heads-up. Even though mine was clear and there was no water in the well, it was a few minutes well spent, for peace of mind.

It seems like it would be a good idea to check it after any time that your car has been exposed to water.

Response to an older post regareding trunk operation

I experienced the same problem with my 2006 XLR. The problem started when I would try to close the trunk lid and it would only go part way down. Then I would need to press the trunk close button again, several times, to finish the close cycle. Eventually, my trunk would neither open or close via any of the three modes, dash switch, keyless remote or trunk mounted switches. I had to open and close it manually. Took it to Clark Cadillac in Pinehurst, NC. for repair. Although cost was $211 to fix, I was pleased with the outcome. My 2006 XLR was now 8 years old in 2014. The XLR certified technician at Clark Cadillac ran a computer diagnostic and saw that the position sensors on my trunk were out of alignment. He said that this happens over time due to normal operation. He realigned the sensors, did a reprogram of the trunk and top operation and everything works perfect. Hope this helps someone out.
