I'm wondering if all V brakes are extremely stiff. Ours requires as much muscle as our SUV, which is surprising to me since they are "upgraded" from the base. To me it makes it unpleasant to drive, & just pulling in and out of the garage, I wonder if it's actually going to stop.

The base doesn't feel this way - the brakes feel the same as my daily driver sedan. So, I'm wondering if all V's feel this way or maybe ours needs some adjusting. Or maybe I need adjusting with some weight training ... :sprite10:

I have absolutely no problem with the brakes, even before I replaced the stock brakes with "The Red Stuff" (although the new Reds do a better job than stock). Before we got rid of my wife's SL550 I would have the same complaint you have, felt like you had to press your foot through the floorboard in a quick stop! Her new one performs much like the "V," stops when you need it to without having to stand on the peddle. As a side note your profile doesn't show a "V."

Just so you know, XLRATING is married to VICTOR-V.

Don't tell all my secrets!

It does feel like to me you have to push the V's brakes through the floor. Based on mileage the problem isn't a need for new brakes. I just don't like the workout.

That thought never crossed my mind...... I figured you were so used to shoving that other pedal through the floor it had just become a habit.....

Can't imagine putting you on a weight machine to exercise for more of that!

Steve

I'm sorry.

Would you have preferred that I said "XLRATING and VICTOR-V live in the same garage"?

Well, our cars ARE shacking up together ...

That's a fair point; that leg also gets used for kicking :bootyshake: But the V brakes outdo me despite all of that!

:( Now back to our regular programming... I really am concerned if the brakes are ok & if this is normal on a V. As much as I like going fast I'm interested in stopping too!

Might want to have them looked at. My V seems the same as the base model I had before. Has Mike had the V calipers powder coated yet? Perhaps some of the pistons have froze and aren't working correctly. You shouldn't have to push through the floor on any power assisted brake system--no matter what kind of car.

Thanks for the info Cubby. Haven't had them powder coated yet. The brakes have been that way since we got it, so couldn't tell if that's just how they are. Mike notices it less because he drives a SUV most of the time, which takes more oomph to stop just because of size. I haven't driven the V in a while, but it almost felt to me like it had gotten worse when I was just moving it in & out of the garage recently. And I don't get going that fast for that!

Mine are stock and do not require any extra pressure to apply. I think yours must need looked at.

You should post a pict of the two of them in the garage, should be a plesant sight! :blinzel:

I had a 86 Caddie Fleetwood de Elegence that had a 4.1 L throttle body fuel injection system and an electric vaccum pump to assist with the vaccum required to operate all the different things in the car. One of those things was the Power Brake system.
Once that pump went out on me and talk about STANDING ON THE BRAKE, WOW!

Now, do you have any manifold vaccum?

Your superchargers are belt driven off the crankshaft and I'm assuming you only have a positive manifold pressure which tells me you either have another source of vaccum or the power brake system works from either positive air or hydraulic pressure.

If there is an electric vaccum pump some place, you might want to make sure it's working.
And if it's hydraulic powered, it could be attached to the Power Steering system.
Of course, there is third option and that is Electrical, simular to our Magnet Ride Control but I see nothing in my Shop Manuals that the V series would be any different than the Base series like mine.

I hope this got someone thinking about what is causing the problem, if there is one.

Good Luck,

Don't know whether this is helpful info, but the brake pedal on the V is stiff from the get-go -- including when you push on it to start the car. There's no variation in the stiffness after that & they don't go soft at any time. While there could be some harmless variations (like the gas pedal on my base is stiffer than the V's, which isn't a big problem), it sounds like this is in the range of a dealer visit.

Thank you all for the input - no real way to know what is "normal" (at least for V's!) without your help.

I can see that the little black one looks like his daddy, but I'm confused about the silver one.

You think "Beauty" has been "stepping out"?

Maybe it was "morning sickness" she had in Hershey last year?

Silver is just Beauty when she's not blushing from talk of "stepping out"! :o
