In case you have ever wondered what all was involved when replacing a shifter cable in a 2000 Mazda 626... here's a few pictures;

The rest of the trim pieces were in the trunk

Start by removing the console,dash carrier,heater core housing and evaporator core housing. Then you can unbolt the cable from the firewall,install the new cable and start putting the puzzle back together. I guess the Asian car makers aren't as smart as everyone thought.:pat:

Tear the dash out to change a shifter cable?? :willy_nilly: The shifter on the console isn't it? At least I think I see it (the shift lever) in the pictures, on the console.

Edit: A 2000 model year? Hmmmmmm, I'd think your labor costs, would be more than what's the car worth!!

That is what happens when the engineers don't talk to the mechanics when creating a new design! Happens all too often.

Yes, you can see the cable running along the floor up to the firewall were it is secured with a bracket on the floor and a bracket and nuts on the firewall. The evaporator case sets over the cable mount on the firewall. You remove the cable by pulling it into the car and pushing the new cable through the firewall.:)
