Help! 2004 XLR Ignition switch

I have my "Passive Locking On" on my 2004 XLR and can open either door on approaching my vehicle, but about 5 times out of 10, after I am seated, I push the start switch and it doesn't crank. I then get a DIC message saying "No Key Fob recognized." I then have to reach in my pocket and hit the unlock button to get the system to recognize the Fob. At times, I can hit the off/acc switch and it will then allow me to start without pushing the button on the Fob. Any suggestions?

First thing to do!! Is to put in a new battery in your FOB. And then go from there to see if it helps (or not).

Battery in Fob is new and checks good on dealer's tester.

Do you have a Fob 2 to see if it acts the same with 1and2. I had all kind of problems with about the same issue. My doors would sometimes not unlock. I then changed that so I didn't get locked out. I read where various people had taken then to the dealer and had the module and fobs replaced. I was ready to do that when I read a discussion where they said to use medical grade batteries and clean the contacts in the fobs with a clean eraser. I did these two things ( I believe it was 11/2 years ago) and it hasn't missed a lick. About six months after I did it, someone else was having the problem and I suggested this and he thanked me because it worked on his. I really think it is the contacts more than the batteries.

It does indeed sound like the fob battery (batteries) are to blame.

I've had some issues withreplacement batteries. Be sure that they are fresh when you get them!

Cell phone is on the opposite hip.

I sometimes have my fob & cell phone in the same pocket and have had no problems; curious, what difference would it make??

With my 04, it had this problem off and on. It almost completely went away when I started carrying the fob in my right pocket instead of my left. My 08 hasn't had this happen, perhaps because I'm still using my right pocket.

I believe there was a TSB for early models that increased the area the antennas covered for FOB recognition. You may want to check with your dealership.

Fob

I wish I had a picture of my key ring but here goes: skinny key ring that lets you put your fob & other keys on it along with a hook that closes and opens. This way you can clip this on your belt loop. Never has my car not opened except for hand car washes that throw your keys on the floor. A tip for is to clip your keys on the visor clip that holds the visor up and then they can't leave them on the floor or in the cup holder where the car won't recognize it, then you have to call OnStar to have them open your car door. not good. Weather is perfect out here in So Cal, 55 at night and 65 in the daytime...........Top down weather.

Yes, electonically these cars are very finicky. Sometimes I found that I could get away with having the key in my left pocket, however that was rare. I finally stopped fighting it and put the key in my right pocket.

Also don't set you car so that it locks automatically when you exit. That way you always have to lock the door and have no chance of locking yourself out.

Interesting, I noticed that I have trained myself to always use the FOB for all my cars. I never use the key to open or close the doors (of course the XLR does not have a key so it is not an issue). I remember how I used to always press the door button down and close the car door. Now, even with my cars that still have a button I just get out and press the FOB. I remember locking myself out of my Chevy Citation in 1983. Had to have a locksmith come and use a slim jim to open the door. Cost $75 dollars. I was a very young guy then and that was a lot of money (still expensive today). I remember I became extremely careful, and started carring a spare car key and apartment key on me, just in case. Those were the days (some tough times but also some good times back then). Anyway, by always using the FOB to open and lock the doors it saves me from being locked out.

I believe TSB stands for Technical Service Bulletin. They are sent to Dealers when problems arise that many owners have had in the past.
