PORT CHARLOTTE - Two pieces of Charlotte County Sheriff's Office electronic technology are responsible for the arrest of a Port Charlotte man after he eluded them in his red Corvette at speeds up to 100mph.
Shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday, a Street Crimes Unit Sergeant was on Midway Blvd. in the construction area and observed a speeding Corvette coming toward him. The officer turned around, activated his lights and siren, and the sports car accelerated rapidly towards Kings Highway at approximately 80mph. The Sergeant then checked the VeriPlate system which captured the fleeing Corvette's license plate. The tag came back to a 1997 red Corvette with an address of 1314 Beacon Dr., Port Charlotte. All area units were then notified. Another deputy quickly located the car and attempted to make a traffic stop but the vehicle fled again on Kings Highway toward I-75.
The SCU Sergeant parked in the median on Kings Highway in an attempt to capture the vehicle tag on the new VeriPlate system. The vehicle passed him exceeding 100mph and the VeriPlate cameras were activated and captured the tag number and photo. The tag came back to a 1997 red Corvette with an address of 1314 Beacon Dr., Port Charlotte.
