I'm having a problem diagnosing a problem with the passenger window. It has to do with the 1/2" or so that it goes up/down when the door is opened or closed. If the window is raised to the top position whenever the car is started or turned off the window begins cycling up and down that small 1/2" about 30 times an then finally stops. I've taken it to the three different Cadillac dealers to get it fixed without success. The last one "registered" the windows and said that should fix but didn't. The OM says registering the windows has to do with automatic full up or full down control. Anyone have any ideas? Appreciate the help.

Try lowering the window and holding the control switch down for 15 to 30 seconds. Then raise the window and hold the switch in the up position for another 15 to 30 seconds and see if that helps.

My passenger's window started to go all the way up then lower to the 1/2 open/closed position. I did the above and that fixed the problem.

I had a 2000 Jaguar XK8 that did the same thing and that was the way they indexed the windows. I guess GM calls it registering the windows, same results.

Every once in a while I had to remove the negative battery cable and kill all of the power to the Jaguar for a couple of minutes then reconnect the cable. That would reset all of the computers in the car. After this I would have to re-index/register both windows.

MarkSki has the right idea to try, but you don't have to hold the buttons that long--5 seconds should do it. Does your top operate normally? If it doesn't that is a sign the windows need re-indexed (both).

If re-indexing the windows doesn't fix your problem, you may have a faulty passenger side door module. This shouldn't be a major issue to fix.

Thanks for this info - my passenger window has been acting up with increasing frequency, & now I know what I'll need when it eventually completely fritzes out. Always great to have that info in hand ahead of time! :patriot:

I had the *EXACT* same problem. It wound up being the door swith (the rubber pad one on the outside of the door). It was a very inexpensive repair.

The switch was thinking it was getting pushed all the time, just like you were trying to open the door all the time (hence the up/down/up/down).

Try it - it's cheap!!

Have you found the solution yet (or have you tried replacing the door switch)?

I am going to check into replacing the outside padded door switch. THANKS for the idea - problem was driving me nuts trying to figure it out.

Problem Solved !!!!

HOMEGAMEROOM -

$11 and 2 minutes. Once i figured out the driver and passenger door switches were interchangeable.... changing the switch moved the problem to the drivers window. Ordered the $11 part and fixed in two minutes. THANK YOU VERY MUCH !! This problem was showed to 3 different Cadillac dealers and none could solve it the past two years..

Thanks again!

That stuff is why this forum is INVALUABLE! :rocker:

Centuar 4, are you able to post the instructions for changing the switches? If so, I am sure that it would help a lot of us who may face this probelm in the future.

It cost me $50 at the Chevy dealer to have them diagnose it and fix it (I was really afraid it would be something dramatic and expensive when I brought them my car with the same issue you had). I'm glad it worked out for you!

PS I keep a spare door switch pad handy - the part is cheap and, as you said, it works on both sides!

PPS The techs at my Chevy dealer have been great; they see a lot more Corvettes than the Cadillac dealers see XLRs, and the cars are reasonably similar.

This may be the easiest XLR repair/component replacement there is. Remove two Phillips head screws, remove the switch pad and disconnect its connector.

Thank you CC. :patriot:

Also were there any symptoms that the switch was failing before it actually failed? I notice that usually I have to depress the button twice before it lowers the window enough and opens the door. Since this happens on both sides, I just assumed it was normal.

And for not much more effort, you can take the switch apart, clean it with electrical contact cleaner (not WD-40) reassemble and save the very modest cost of a new one.

When you see this switch on ebay they usually say they are the new and updated gm version. Have they actually changed the switch does anyone know?
V Happy:confused:

The link does not go to the switch. It just goes to a general advertisment page.

I only typed in that ebay. It wasn't supposed to be a link. I don't know how it came out like that. sorry
If you put in XLR door switch when you come to the switches they say something to lead you to believe they are new and improved.
V Happy:(
