Tires

I am running the OEM Michelin's on the same rim/wheel.

John if your looking for a deal look on Craigslist. Here in Chicago I see ALOT of run flats on Craigslist from all the Vette owners replacing theirs. I've found multiple sets brand new 18's 245/45/18 and so on. Alot of the vette guys swear the tires are to ruff of ride. My brother in law got rid of the run flats has had flats but the onboard pressure readings let him know if he was getting low. Can of fix a flat and a onboard compressor that's what he does. Good luck. Question with the new wheels what kind of spacing do you have from the inside of rim to the inner fender for rubbing issues. You think a 19 will fit on the rear?

In response....

"OEM Michelins" is a great start but which one and whut size??

Stella,......
The Standard "05-06" 18X8-1/2 Corvette wheel is a direct fit/replacement for the boring OEM XLR wheel and looks soooo much better.
I'm not sure about the 19's as I made-up my mind to keep-em' all the same for rotation purposes.
Yeah,....not quite as sexy but that's MY choice, not that I've been VERY Tempted.
Surely there's someone out there that has made this move,..........!

Mine came with Goodyear RS-A Runflats on it, after 38,000 miles, all four tires have cord separations with plenty of rubber left on the tires. The Goodyears are $377 ea.
I know a lot of Corvette people that are going with Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 ZP. Base XLR tire size is 235/50ZR18. They tell me they are the quietest runflat available and the ride is smooth as silk. www.tirerack.com has them for $277ea. Best price I've found is Costco @ $258ea.

Only one question for MTROCKET,.....
Who iz' "They" in "They tell me" ??
Any other Members wanna' chime in??

Just wish the previous owner didn't just replace the Pirelli run flats on mine. Personally, hate the tire, the ride, lack of traction. Wonder if a mich replacement would help the under steer issue?

It just has to be a greatbtirento warrant replacing new tires...I am kinda cheap here lol

Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 ZP was the oem tire for the 04-05 XLR. Some years ago at Corvettes at Carlisle (around the C5 intro time) a couple of Bowling Green folks said they had wanted to use Michelins on the C5 but couldn't due to a corporate deal with Goodyear.

Anyway, I'm looking for maximum comfort so in a few months I expect I'll be going to the non-run-flat Bridgestone Turanza Serenity Plus, and whichever Slime kit fits best.

I have also considered changing to a "non run flat" tire, and had have always end up getting the run flats just for the peace of mind. From what I understand and have been told that the "slime" kits or fix a flat type products will ruin your TPMS units.

per the slime.com website:
[h=3]Is Slime TPMS safe?[/h] Yes, Slime makes a TPMS safe formula for cars and trucks with Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS). Look for the yellow bottle and the TPMS Safe icon. Many of Slime’s Spair kits also feature TPMS Safe Sealant. If your vehicle has TPMS, try the Smart Spair or Safety Spair from Slime.

Fix-a-Flat also claims to be tire sensor safe.

One difference I noted is that fix-a-flat says it can freeze, slime says it has antifreeze in

the slime may be sensor safe, but I bet your tire guy wont like you for it :D. But then he's not the one that will be needing to drive on from the tire situation either.

Just looked at the link for the vette exhaust, looks like the v exhaust too, with the valves that open.

How about,......

I'm looking at some 235/40/18 Michelin's,...
Any comments on the difference in size??

235/40 18 would be almost 7% smaller in diameter. At an indicated 70 mph, you would actually be doing 65. And once you mount them your odometer reading will rack up more miles than you are driving.

Getting my Michelin Pilot HX MXM4 ZP put on this week... I'll report back on how nice (or bad) they are. Costco has a $70 rebate on Michelin tires starting September 13, so will wait until uhen.

The last time I had my tires changed, Michelin was offering a $100.00 Visa gift card. I currently have the same tires and they are great, they could be a bit quieter but are certainly acceptable...imho.

Had a set of Michelin runflats put on last Monday and so far they are better than the Goodyears they replaced. Got them from Discount tire for 1490.00 which included the certificates for free replacement if needed. As runflates are not supposed to be repaired if you pick up a nail etc I thought the certificates were a good deal. I am also getting a $70.00 Visa card sent to me. I will be going back to Discount next week to have a new wheel center put on as they damaged one taking it off and had to order the new one. At least they did not damange my rocker panels as Cadillac did the week before when they raised it up. Yes they had the car for a week while they got in a new set of rockers and installed them.
