HUD and Polorized glasses

Did anyone experience the loss of HUD while wearing polarized lenses?
I recently got a pair of prescription glasses with polarized lenses and all of a sudden the HUD on my windshield disappeared. After some research I found out that this is common.
While wearing the lenses however, I did learn that if I tilted my head to the side (left or right) the HUD reappeared. So now I can enjoy my polarized lenses and just tilt my head when I want to see the display.

I don’t know if this will work for everyone, maybe my lenses are different, but its worth a try.

Yep... been there, done that, same result. Same tilt of the head... makes me kind of feel like the guy on CSI, though (can't for the life of me remember his name on the show). I've always wondered why he always tilts his head... maybe he owns an XLR as well???

Also when driving into the sun or if the sun is at the right angle, the HUD disappears. I found this out one day when I was driving late morning to early afternoon.

Only part of the HUD disappears on mine, when I'm wearing my sunglasses: the stuff on the left (speed, gear selector, etc.). The ACC indicator and the "vehicle detect" symbol come thru OK. I guess drivers behind us all believe we have a crick in our necks from our trying to read the speed, the gear number, etc...

Oh, well, as they say where I'm from in MN, "Tellwicha".

Well you will c the speed until you change radio stations, use you acc, and when u use your acc then you'll c the distance or how close you want to follow

Also if you switch to manual shift you will see the 1-5th that your shifted into and us with ACC will see the car 1-7 distance when changing amongst some other functions And things that was already mention!

HUD and Polarized Glasses

Yes, I have the same issue and drive with non-polarized sunglasses. I learned about this when working with one of my customers. My company sells custom labels, overlays and product ID items. We had been supplying a lens cover to a mfg. of hand held water testing equipment. This customer received complaints from people out in the field testing stream conditions that they were not able to read the LCD through the lens with their polarized sunglasses. After testing we found that if the material supplied was shifted at a 45 degree angle it was possible to read the display. It had something to do with the way the polycarbonite was extruded. Further testing showed that polarizing does affect the way that light waves are viewed. I am not exactly Mr. Wizard but hopefully you understand what I am trying to convey.

Have had same issue with noncorrective polarizing sunglasses. Will try turning my head a bit. I am able to see the HUD with sunglasses as the sun goes down but not during the day.

I wear a contact in the left eye only, so I have polarized sunglasses with right eye for distance correction. I have noticed not turning but move your head right or left, a little up or down its will show up at certain spots! Give that a try it works for me every time!

Besides this really makes the people in the car next to you wonder, "What is HE on???" Or "I'll have what he's having."

I tried turning my head but with my Bolle' sunglasses still can't see the HUD until late in the evening, with Ray-Ban's (which I assume are polarized since all the pilots I know use them) I can see the HUD all the time. The Bolle' glasses are much darker tinted so that may have something to do with it also.

Ray-Ban sunglasses

I always wear original Ray-Ban Aviators (made by Bausch & Lomb prior to the time that Ray-Ban was sold to Luxotica). They present no problems with the HUD display. I don't believe that they are polarized, though they do block 100% of UV light.

After Ray-Ban was sold to Luxotica, I laid in a stock of enough new pairs to last me the rest of my life, about 20 pair.

Just an engineer chiming in here. The reason polarized sunglasses work so well is the light (glare) reflected off of any surface is polarized horizontally. Polarized sunglasses are polarized vertically and cancel out glare. Since the HUD is a reflected light image, your polarized glasses block that light just as it would road glare. I tilt my head too. If you notice, the more you tilt your head, the more of the HUD image you can see!

I have a set of those magnetic snap on sun glasses that attach to my frames. Stock lenses are polarized. Optometrist swapped the lenses out for non polarized ones. Problem solved.
