Ok not even home and have a issue.. The wife decided to take the car out because it was a beautiful day and of corse put the top down. She was gone for maybe 2 hours and when she got home the top will not go up, having a service fault of (Top Motor Over Temp). She said the trunk goes up like everything is going to work but them the top it's self will not come out of the trunk and after a couple of trys it showes (Top Motor Over Temp). So you guys that have some Knowlage about this please let me know if there is anything she can do because it will be a week before I get home. The car is parked inside but would like to get it up bec ause she is in a panic because it happened when she was driving it... HELPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!:dunno::dunno:

Ok, I have looked on here and Google and have found a number of items it can be from a pump to a switch and so on. She said the trunk and front cover comes up and the top sounds like it starts to come up but then nothing. After she tryes it 2 or 3 time she will get the error (Top Motor Over Temp). Like I said I am not there to help her and if i was then I probly would not have to ask for advice but if there is anything she can check I would be greatful for the help....

When she tries to raise the top, the trunk stops midway, correct? Has she tried to release the button then try to push it again in the same direction? I've had top hiccups like that. Most of the time it will "fix" itself after driving about 40 miles. Other times I need to get the TECHII and do a top relearn that fixes it.

Don't know if your wife will be able to do it, but it could be low on fluid. The top motor and control module in in the left rear of the trunk (in a recess under the carpet) If the pump is overheating and it's the thermistor, it is not replaceable, you'll have to replace the whole pump. I wouldn't have her keep trying if is low on fluid, that may do more damage.

Well she called the manager at the Cadillac dealership and he told her to bring it over there tomorrow and they would take care of it. She does have a way of getting her point across but as long as they fix it for her, For FREE, I do not care what she did.... LOL

Ok, I keep seeing this Tech II tool in post, what is it just a OBD II reader or a special one for Cadillacs? Let me know because I have a good OBD II reader but if it is for Cadillacs then I need one of these as well. Thanks

Look them up on the internet a GM Tech2 is different than the OBD2 an around $200-300 That's why I didn't buy one yet and not sure if I'd know how to use it anyway......[emoji23]

Today's scan tools are indispensable when troubleshooting the complexities inherent to modern automobiles. With the dual-bus, networked architecture of the XLR and it's many function-specific modules, they're even more so.

As useful as scan tools are, the technical ability to interpret the results using a GM Service manual is vital. Both compliment the other, but neither is a substitute for working system knowledge or how to perform repairs correctly and most important: reliably.

The Service manual specifically calls out the Tech 2 during the troubleshooting process. The newer, laptop-based MDI will work equally well. As anyone who owns or has used a Tech 2 will tell you, they provide a LOT of information, a great deal of which is incomprehensible to the average DIYer.

The XLR was the first vehicle the Tech 2 could one a comprehensive diagnostic test; prior to that, individual sub-routines could be initiated to test specific vehicle parameters. (The Tech 2 can perform specific scans of the XLR as well.)

While the Hewett Technologies scan tool claims compatibility with late model GM vehicles, it may (or may not) work so well with the established troubleshooting "tree" the Service manual uses in conjunction with the Tech 2. The Service manual gives specific direction as to what parameters to inspect with the Tech 2 and guidance when interpreting the results.

Unless someone wants to be the test article and purchase one of these while reading the Service manual, I'd recommend sticking with the tried-and-true GM troubleshooting methodology.

Another benefit of using the factory-approved troubleshooting tools and manuals is if you have a problem deciphering something, you have a better chance of getting a question answered online if other XLR owners are on the "same page" tool and documentation-wise.

YMMV,

Mine is capable for most all GM vehicles from 1996 to 2013 if I'm not mistaken, I'd have to check to make sure of the exact year range, so it's pretty good for almost all

Low fluid could mean a leak.

If there is no low fluid, if you hold the button to raise the top too long and it's not working right it can overheat.

But the problem could be fixed with something as simple as the top-relearn they can do with the Tech-2 at the dealership. These cars are all getting older and the sensor values will not be the same due to age, even if the sensor is still fine just because of their age.

Be sure your dealership said they tried the re-learn process first before they start saying you need to spend $$$$. And if they do say you need to replace some expensive parts and don't like their prices, come back here, there are places that can rebuild many of the hydraulic parts much cheaper than buying new.
