Is it normal for the cover over the top of the engine air filter elements to just sit there loosely? It seems that there is almost nothing holding mine in place.

If I am reading your question right, you are talking about the air filter covers (2) one left and one right. They have tabs that slide into slots in the bottom portion and two clips on the other side of the tabs that clip to the bottom portion. If you are talking about the engine cover, there are four corner tabs that slip into a rubber grommet to hold it into place.

The wide piece over top of both air filter elements. Not affixed in any way, it just sits there. Notice the broken intercooler cover near the bolt.

That's a piece not on earlier (2004-2007) models. Sorry I can't help you on that one.

Mine is different on my 2009, it is not a V but I am going to guess it will latch the same as it looks about the same:ut different! The pictures are not the best, you can see that my car has two covers, your has one continuous one.

My '07 is the same as yours, Graytoad. In fact, I have never seen one continuous cover as yours is, Phrede.:dunno::dunno:

Do you think it may be "aftermarket" or "homemade"? To dress it up a bit?

I have no clue if aftermarket or what. I know if I take it off the top of the filters are exposed.

The piece is factory, it is called a splash shield. It was used just for the V. If my memory is correct, it should be held down @ each end with push in retainers.:)

Not one on my 2006 V

My 07 V has the individual covers over each filter, which clip on; it also has the one-piece cover over them as shown in the pic. The one-piece cover has a tab at either end which flexes to clip on to the outside ends of the 2 individual filter housings. It's not a tight fit so you can wiggle it slightly even when it is clipped on correctly. Other than that, it just sits there looking sorry for itself!

My air filters are totally open on the top. There is a housing that surrounds them that has the tabs and the clips. There are some tabs on the ends of this wide piece, but no place for the tabs to get locked in.

Most curious, Phrede. I think the tabs on the large "splash" cover actually clip on to the edges of the two individual filter covers. I wonder if these two individual covers on your car have somehow gone missing?

It sounds like they redesigned it after the first model year for the V. Can you post a photo of the filters without the cover just for comparison?

Not exactly what I remembered. Hmm, sorry for the confusion. The filter faces are exposed on the outboard ends.

I just found out there is no under hood light. I don't know what they were thinking with all of the whiz bang features, but some of the basics are omitted. There must be some reason.

That's interesting, that is what mine looked like when I purchased it several years ago. I did notice something that looked like some round velcro pads that had been glued to the top of the filter covers. Perhaps to hold the cover you have on yours? If it was there on my 2006 someone removed it and never put it back on.

The underhood lamp was discontinued after the 2006 model. Probably a cost reduction measure. Of course we always joke about it. Who is going to look under the hood of their Cadillac in the dark anyway? That's what Cadillac roadside assistance is for. Actually I took the bulb out of my underhood lamp anyway so I could leave the hood open without running the battery down.
