A couple of my OEM base wheels have had chips/peeling since I got the car. The prior owner replaced the run flats, & it looks like whoever did it buggered the rims up. It's starting to get worse & more "finish" is popping off.

Has as anyone else had this & had it fixed? I haven't checked with a rim repair shop yet to see what they can do (they also are a hike from my house), plus I don't want something that looks worse or will only last 6 mos.

Interesting to know you had that happen on your Corvette - never had this happen on any car before and I've had a bunch of Cadillacs/Chevrolets. Of course, none of them had run flats to change out either ....

Hi Amy, is it a chip/gouge in the wheel or just the clearcoat that's coming off? if it's gouged/curb scraped it'll have to be repaired/welded then recleared. if it's just the clear they can be stripped and recleared. hope this helps. Al:dunno:

Amy I blowed this picture up for a super close look and honestly it looks almost like it was a chip that had been repaired and it just now breaking out again! I'd try a local auto body paint or powder coating shop for some professional advice!
Good luck!

It's not clear coat coming off as far as I can tell but a chip (I have pre-installed curb rash on a different wheel :chuckle). The black is where more has popped off since I first got it. Looks like it's a thin layer of metal you could probably get your fingernail under & pop off more. I don't know how alloy wheels are made but maybe it's the alloy coming off.

Part of my concern is if I mess with it & the fix doesn't last whether it will end up pulling off more of the metal (if that makes sense) - in which case I'd probably just leave it alone.

Like I said have a professional take a peek at it and take it from there! That would be my best advice! Good Luck

First it's the wheels, next you'll be washing the paint off!
