Gas Door cable replaecment

The pin that holds my gas door broke on my 2008 - it actually crumbled and fell apart and the cable has seen better days.. I ordered a new unit but am finding it is beyond a pain to replace. You have to remove the wheel and inner fender to gain access. However, the access point where the cable is routed from the actuator in the trunk to the door area is very small and impossible to feed the cable through. I thought about drilling that access point a little larger but wanted to see if anyone has any deas?

Not knowing what I'm talking about, but can you tie the end of the old cable to the new cable and pull it through? Hopefully someone else on this site has a better answer.
