This is an old Eldorado dash. Can anyone tell me what the heck is the part mounted on the dash driver's side left of the steering wheel? Is it some type of spotlight? It's driving me crazy!! This site has been so helpful with my XLR, lots of really smart people here so answer if you know. Thanks.

I'm gonna guess automatic headlight dimmer.

Just guessing, but I think this might be GM's Autronic eye used for auto high beams.

Thanks everyone. I knew this group would come through. Sounds like nice technology, I wonder why they dumped it? As we know too well, GM apparently has a history of dumping headlights! I love the old marketing pics. thanks again.

They actually kept it around - my '70 Caddy had it, but the "eye" was hidden behind the grill, so no cool pictures. The feature didn't work too great ... Also had a way more computerized version on my '08 STS, never tried it out since it didn't work so well 38 years earlier :chuckle
