Warning! Possible oil pump failures due to oil changes.

It was brought to my attention that the oil pumps on our cars are subject to premature failure after oil changes. This is a known issue by GM and it is documented in their technical assistance service system/database. The issue is that when oil is drained and replaced the oil pump will not self prime, and eventually fail. From what I understand is that these pumps are on our cars and on GM parts shelves. Also GM has not made a recall or issued a TSB in regards to this problem. This is the reason my oil pump had to be replaced, during the recent rebuild of my engine. I just wanted to give everyone a "heads up" about this problem. Kind of scary now when you anticipate having your oil changed.

External pump to fill the system?

I always fill the oil filter to the top with new oil when I reinstall it so there will be very little air gap when the engine is restarted after an oil change. It would also be a good idea to watch your oil pressure gauge when you first starrt it after an oil change just to make sure the pressure comes back up immediately. But really, these engines have been around for how long and this is the first I have heard of an oil delivery problem.
