Hello to all, I'm new here. I'm looking at a one owner XLR with 72,000 miles. How do these Northstar engines and the driveline handle mileage? I've read some posts concerning oil leaks and I'm sure at 72,000 some problems will show up here. Is the engine and driveline still pretty solid with these miles? Any help is appreciated, TIA Roger.

I was surprised to find that after a long trip my 09 was getting 29 mpg highway. Of course that was with cruise control on, with flat and level driveing.

My 2000 Eldorado ETC's Northstar 4.6L has 101,000 + miles on it and its still going strong so I don't think 72,000 miles is very much for a Northstar V8. That being said I would get a carfax on the car to kind of gauge the condition of the whole car and if everything looks good, get it. The XLR is one of the most fun cars to drive that I have ever had the pleasure of owning. I have had alot of high profile cars in the past: 1966 Corvette, 1969 Camaro SS, 1969 Mustang Boss 302, 1967 Firebird, 1990 Blazer, 1942 Dodge Power Master, 1972 Plymouth Duster, 1969 El Camino SS, 1934 Ford Coupe just to name a few. (Did I mention that I am kind of a gearhead?)

I almost never see another XLR on the road, it has great stock performance and I always get comments about how nice it looks.

Think the engines & transmissions are pretty rock solid on these - there's a few folks on here well north of 100k miles, & one with over 250k. "Incidentals" - electronic wizardry - are more likely to give problems than anything else.

As for oil leaks, mine got fixed at 42k because I had a warranty that covered it. While I had multiple leaks that were expensive to fix, they were basically just messy & not so bad that I had to keep topping off oil. If I didn't have a warranty I would have just lived with it.

It couldn't hurt to have a GM dealership run the VIN and print a Service History. Cheap insurance.

Thanks

Thanks to all the contributors above, who answered to my post #1. I did buy this XLR which is a one owner Florida car and it is in new condition. My User Name should have been "Wanabee", (no longer the case) but my two finger typing got crossed up, so it got posted as Wenebee. Is there a way to change a User Name? It's great to be part of this group.

Congrats on your purchase! - just in time for top down season. The fact that the same person kept the car that long is a good sign. :thumbsup

If you PM Rob, the site administrator, he can help you with changing your user name.
