My XLR/V(s)
2004
It takes forever to fill my 2004 at the gas pump. I have to pump the gas in very slowly and the pump continuously cuts off, even at low flow pressure. I have pulled the nozzle out as far as possible but it still wont pump very fast. I have taken it to the Cadilliac dealer who hasn't been able to find the problem yet. Anyone have any suggestions?

That's weird because the reason the gas pump stops is the nozzle senses its full. Air automatically helps the fuel go down the fill tube along with gravity. The nozzles stops when fuel touches the tip sensing its full. Have you tried a different station maybe the outlet on the handles are bigger not letting air to help. I do know don't try putting more in after the nozzle clicks or stops. Usually try to even out the dollar amount on fill ups not with the xlr. When it stops its topped off. Maybe theirs a vent line in the fill tube that might b partially clogged I check diagrams when I get a chance

I'm in CA so I don't know what type of gas nozzels that are used in other states, but I too experience the same problem. What's the solution? Simple. Fill the car up as you normal do, but when the sensor stops the pump, then manually turn the nozzel (handle) in a upward position. In otherwards, if the normal position is 6 o'clock I turn the nozzel in a 9 o'clock position (sometimes it 10, 11, or 12 o'clock). These positions work for me on my 2007 XLR. Most of the times the nozzel will hold this position, but if not at least you can continue to pump gas and not have to wonder if the car has reached the maximum level.

Warning: I have found that once in these positions the nozzel sensor will shut off; do not attempt to "top off" because the gas level it is at or near the opening and will result in spillage on the exterior of the car. This has happened to me several times while using these postions. :pat:

Fueling XLR's compares to no other vehicle I've ever owned. I fill both XLR's with a 1/4 pull on the pump lever.

XLR's have 2 fuel tanks, one behind each seat and there is a fill tube that transfers the fuel between the tanks. This seems to be the biggest slow down on a "fast fill". Really slow flow is the only way I keep the pump from cutting off before the tank is full.

And as stated before.......

Do NOT attempt to "top the tank off" once the fuel nozzle kicks off!

I didn't know this. I guess you learn something new every day
:dunno:

I did this by mistake. i had a small puddle next to my feet. I also took the towel and dipped it in watere to remove the over spill on the sde. Boy i'll never do that again :ugh:

Thanks for all the posts and the info. It sounds like this is just an issue I'm going to have to get used to. A small price to pay to drive a really great car.

I did the same thing. In Oregon, you are not allowed to fill your own tank. I was in Washington and I wanted to ROUND UP to the next dollar and as I was clicking a few pennies at a time and watching the pump, the gas was flowing down the side. Once that filler clicks off that's as much and I'm going to have put into my tank(s).

Okay, here's a step-by-step pictorial of what I do when gassing up my XLR. All I have to do is:

This method works for me at Chevron stations here in CA using this particular gas nozzle. I've used it too at other station and it works just the same if the nozzle is similar to that of Chevron. Notice that my gas gauge reads; FULL. Once the nozzle stops I STOP PUMPING. If the nozzle isn't in this position it was continue to shut off.

Wouldn't you risk scratching the car if you do it that way? 😱

Just to throw it out there for the sake of your gas door. The tab that comes off the back of the filler door that locks the door. If you look their is a half moon cut out on the top of the tab. That half moon cut out is where your suppose to hang the gas cap. It's so your cap isnt dangling on the side of your quarter panel and scratching it, or even over the top of the cover. Just to throw it out there.

Fill tank fast

You guys always get it right no matter how long it takes :laugh:I learned a long time ago to turn the handle to 12 O'clock, click it on fast and fills every time without spilling really quick. If I'm not adjacent to the pump and it wants to slip around, I just lean on it............works for me:wave:I just realized that the REPLY TO THREAD at the bottom right leaves the original quote, but when I use the REPLY TO QUOTE THREAD at the top left it removes the original quote, getting rid of all those pictures. dah! what took me so long to find that?
