After a yet to be determined failure with the electrical system I needed to get the car into neutral in prep to be loaded on a flatback.

The steps are:
  1. Chock the wheels to prevent rolling. Do not set the parking brake.
  2. Pry down the ring on the bottom of the shift knob.
  3. Loosen the T-15 set screw on the bottom of the shift knob on the side towards the rear of the car.
  4. Remove shift knob.
  5. Open the arm rest.
  6. Gently pry up on the sides of the top of the console. Start nearest the armrest and work forward.
  7. Disconnect one electrical connector about 2/3 the way back.
  8. Lift the top of the console leaving the rest of the wiring in place and set aside.
  9. While depressing the brake push the plunger on the solenoid (white) on the right side of the assembly forward, push the center of the gear shift handle down and move the shifter rearward out of park.

Good job on explanation and pictures. I'm sure this will help a bunch of XLR owners.

Someone needs to take this to the next level, i.e., continue dismantling and remove the shifter to the expose the shifter cable and explain how to shift gears when the cable is broke.

I still have nightmares about my Mid-Ohio to St. Louis trip using needle nose pliers to shift (not to mention the burns on my hands). :banghead: I now keep a pair of thick leather gloves in the trunk to keep from burning my hands on the exhaust tunnel.

What broke? The cable or an end of the cable piece? I didn't know and didn't even think of how the tranny was shifted being at the rear of the car.
