No IPOD interface for the XLR's?

Look what I found listed under new changes for the 2009 XLR's... The site link and statement are:

"Also new is an iPod interface that is available through Cadillac Accessories. It allows the music stored on an iPod to be played through the XLR’s audio system"

http://media.gm.com/us/cadillac/en/product_services/r_cars/r_c_XLR/09index.html

I looked at: http://www.gmaccessoriesstore.com/, but nothing listed there. Not sure if this is the "official" Cadillac accessories site or not? Does anyone know where to find this new GM IPOD interface that is supposed to be available for 2009 XLR's?

I suspect that they may be referring to the Personal Audio Link (PAL), that has been on continuous hold for the last couple of years. I kept waitng on it for my Vette and finally got tired of waiting and bought a after market one.

I contacted gmpartsdirect.com and it seems my suspicions are correct. The IPOD interface announced as new for 09 is unavailable. It's called a Personal Audio Link (PAL) just like the one for the Corvette. It's obviously a very low if any priority at GM. GM announced a couple times that the PAL for the Corvette was coming out and gave a date, but each time the date came and went without releasing it. Consequently, I won't be holding my breath for the XLR one either.

Heck, my GT500 has an IPOD input jack and it cost a quite a few bucks less than Doris's XLR. :dunno: Of course, it also has a 1,000 watt stereo......:naughty:

You are correct. The electronics in the XLR is from the 2004 design of the vehicle--it hasn't been updated like other models. Even the navigation is unique to this vehicle. There are some aftermarket suppliers that make a unit to attach an ipod to the system. I have one that works fairly well. I'll have to search a home fot the company name and website and let you know later.

I would love to learn which make and model worked for you. I am in Honolulu and there is no XM satellite coverage here. I looked at the Neucleus application guide, but there is no mention of the XLR, only the CTS and Escalade.

Durkin,

If your car is not equipped with the XM tuner, you should still have the wiring for it in the trunk. The unit you want is the lockpick. you can find it at this link: http://www.coastaletech.com/CADILLAC_APPLICATIONS.htm
They should be able to help you out.

The unit is between the seats in the trunk area, more toward the passanger seat. If you take out the storage compartment between the seats you will be able to see it in the upper left corner. The instructions with the unit are very easy to follow. You won't be able to do everything i.e search for songs, change sttings on the ipod etc., but it works pretty well. I set my ipod to shuffle and plug it in and let it play... You can adjust the volume from the steering wheel control, go to the next or previous song using the P1 & P2 buttons on the nav screen or set it up to play from your playlists.

Thanks! This looks perfect. I have an XM radio, but it only works on the mainland. Where in the trunk is it located?

Looks like GM has come out with an IPOD kit for Vettes, they call it a PAL. I don't know if it'll fit our X's. Found this on the Corvette Fourm.

I know a lot of us would like an IPOD in our cars.

Chad

I can almost guarantee that it won't. The jury is still out if it will even work on all Corvette C6's. When and if it ever hits the market I guess we will know for sure. It looks like it may be out soon, but I'm not holding my breath because GM has been going to release the Personal Audio Link (PAL) any day now for the last 3+ years.

Anybody tried other interfaces

I've seen comments about having the Lockpick and that it works with "limitations". Has anybody tried the others. I'm leaning towards getting the Soundgate and trying it, but thought I would check here first. They all sound good on paper, but its seems everyone that installs one in an XLR has additional limitations over other GM cars and even differences by year. I have an 05, and although I've burned audio CDs that work fine, doesn't compare to a direct connect Ipod that I've been able to get in every other car I've had.

The limitations have to do with the electronic equipment in the car--it has never changed since it's inception; thus the problems. Most other autos have higher production numbers than the XLR had, so making changes in upgraded technology is less expensive to do and pass the costs on. I have close to 2000 songs on my ipod and have it set up to shuffle songs. I plug it in the lockpick and let it play ; it works fine for me. You can also put songs you like in the on-the-go file and play just those if you want. Most of the limitations have to do with searching for songs etc. and some buttons on the steering wheel don't operate with it.

Thanks for quick reply

Thanks, I usually just use one of three playlists and shuffle. If that's manageable with the Lockpick, it would work for me. I'm not going be searching for things while on the road anyway, too many crazy drivers to watch out for in Northern Virginia.

I recently received the GM Lockpick (basic iPod/iPhone version) and installed it yesterday. The harness has three ends that are all different and will only fit where they're supposed to affix. Made the connections and my XM information vanished from the display. Rechecked (and rechecked again) the connections and they were all secure. Uninstalled unit and re-connected stock XM connection to stock XM unit and XM returned.

I had specified upon order that the install was for a 2006 XLR V and it appeared that the dip switches were pre-configured for a GM LAN 29 bit Navigation system (based on the rather sketchy instructions included)... so I didn't alter them in any way.

I'd really like to enjoy the capability of this feature, but am wondering if the unit I received was defective. Has anyone experienced the loss of XM upon install and were able to somehow regain it along with the iPod functioning capability of the Lockpick unit? Any suggestions would be appreciated! I've emailed Coastaletech, but they apparently tightly lock up the shop on weekends.

I guess then, I should either invest in the cheap $50 iPod radio dock or spend the dough and get the lock pick. I have a 2006 infrared. I would like to play my music from my iPod touch and iPhone 4S. The only way to do that now is plug in the charger to the armrest plug and ply through my iPhone speaker.

I really need to find a way to get my iphone to work on the XLR, both for music and for phone use. The PAL 2 looks promising, but not the only solution on the market (lockpick for audio, Neo BT and Bluestar for bluetooth). I might try stopping by a car audio specialist and see if they have any suggestions (they are a Neo dealer).
