Hi all.....anyone have any experience with having the inside of the rims peeling ...looks like it's corroded.....went to a local tire supplier and repair shop that Cadillac dealership recommended and was told Rim is chrome ... can send out but lengthy time and high cost ..better off with a new rim.....
A local shop told me he can scrape it and smooth it down ...possibly paint all the interior rims a flat black as car is black..
Not sure about that look...
Everyone here has been very helpful in the past ..hope can enlighten again...J

Do you know if rims are rechromes or factory order? If this was my car and the chrome looked good on the outside I would have them take the tire off clean the rim and remount. They should at that point know how bad the damage is. If it is minimal you would probably be ok. I know if you look on eBay they have chrome wheels reasonable but as always check the company out that is supplying the wheel. Most rechromes require an exchange,so if you have to get a replacement you may be able to drive till the new one comes in. If things aren't too bad most of the cleaning and smoothing is under the tire. (You won't see it). Chrome wheels are prone to this condition especially if a caustic wheel cleaner is used!
Hope this helps:dunno:

Hi V Happy...thanks so much for your thought about this...Truthfully..I thought that the rims were polished alloy wheels as stated on purchase stickers for this car...so I was surprised...don't know the history ..thinking I will take your advice and just have them taken in and cleaned and scraped ...see the extent of anything and just go from there..Plenty of time to get crazy with this...
Again...thank you for reaching out..J

I had the alloy wheels, not chrome, & the alloy started popping off the outside edge on the face of the wheel. Visited a really good wheel shop (they do Ferraris, Lambos, work for dealers, etc.), who told me the alloy damage could not be repaired & offered 2 solutions: (1) have the wheel chromed. Not a good option if the wheel is subjected to salt on roads or sea air because it will pit. Since we have sea air here, I took a pass on that. (2) Sandblast the wheel & paint it. If it gets damaged, it can be fixed with a quick repaint. This is not true of powder coating. I went this route & had mine painted hyper silver, which has beautiful flakes that sparkle in the sun. Also, the shop guarantees the job from any damage so long as only they do work any future work that involves the wheels (replacing the tires, etc), which we had no problem with. If they damage them, the repaint is on their dime. We use a set of nylon trim removal tools for popping off the center cap, since they won't damage the paint.

You could also look for a replacement wheel in good shape on eBay, etc., since you just need one fixed & the wheel shop options I was given require doing all four. But, keep in mind if you go the paint route, you have wide open options on what & how you want it painted & can get creative. Here's a shot of my wheel below, the shop came up with matching the wreath & crest to my car color on their own & surprised me with it because they wanted to do something special on my car (which they said they'd undo if I didn't like it).

Good luck!

This past February, my wife had to dodge an erratic driver in a parking lot. Resulted in a bad case of curb rash. I found a refinisher on eBay that had a wheel matching the 7 spoke alloy wheels. It was refinished and clear coated. I bought it for 160$, free shipping. When I had the wheel changed, I boxed the old wheel up, sent it back to the company with a free shipping label, and got a 100$ core charge back. So essentially I changed out a damaged wheel for 60$ plus installation.
You might want to consider something like that. They have a website. http://stores.ebay.com/wheelsamericahouston/

Thanks XL RATING ...Tires look great...As I Am not a handy guy , I may be confusing you all with terminology...The corrosion is behind the rim spokes..inside the wheel well..Hope I am saying that right..
tThe actual chrome facing out is fine.. its behind it where the problem lies...Will try to get a pix out later..Thanks all
