My 2006 XLR is constantly indicating "Top Not Secure" message on the dash whenever I encounter a rough patch of highway. I took it to a Cadillac dealer early March of this year. Dealer had it for 5 days, told me it was fixed. I was about 5 miles from dealer on the drive home, hit a hole and "Top Not Secure" message came back. Dealer apologized, came to my home and picked up car then returned 3 days later. I've driven car regularly all summer, including a road trip from PA to South Beach with no problem. A few weeks ago the problem reappeared.

Anyone else have the Top Not Secure problem?

Thanks
Chuck

Yep... have the "top not secure" show up quite often, and not only when I'm on a rough patch of road. It's telling you that the top is not latched down in the trunk; if you open the truck when it's on, you can lift the back side of the top. Sometimes, the "top not secure" goes on & off on the same drive. I just put the top up and then down, and the top latches down and usually stays latched.
The problem I've found is getting it to the dealer when the "top not secure" is showing for them to diagnose the problem - everytime I'm going to take it in, everything is fine. Not sure what the problem is... maybe a top reprogram would take care of the problem??:dunno:
Post back if, or when, you get the problem solved.

I'm getting the message only when the top is closed and not when the lid is down and stored in the trunk.

I had the same issue with my dealer not being able to replicate the behavior in their service dept. I was glad when they picked the car up at my home to take back. Then they saw the message. Dealer initially told me it was a faulty positioning potentiometer, then said it was some other sensor. Either case it was trial and error diagnostics by the dealer.

Anyways, I've parked the car for the winter and it's not going to see much day light until mid-March 2013. I thought I'd start doing some homework now and maybe get some wiring diagrams and sensor locations.

I will let you know what I find.

Interesting... I've never had the message when the top is up. Can you lift the top off of the windshield header when the message is on? If not, for some reason it's "seeing" the top unlatched at the header when it's actually latched; if you can, I definately wouldn't be doing much driving in it until I got it taken care of.

Sounds like a sensor

There is a sensor in the windshield area; I believe on the passanger side; That sends a message through the cycling that the top is up and latched. I would have the dealer test that sensor, it is most likely your problem.

Top Notch Secure Light

Your concern is certainly understandable with this issue. If you have it back in and the dealer is unable to repair the issue, please send PM with the VIN#, your contact information, and situation. I hope this is resolved quickly for you.

Matt,

This is the description of when the light should come on from page 3-76 of the Owner's Manual
TOP NOT SECURE: This message will display when the
retractable hardtop button is released before the top open
or close operation is complete. Press and hold the
retractable hardtop button to fully open or close the top.

Chuck I had the exact same problem I found it to be the adjustment for the trunk divider. The left side where it latches was loose. I beleive there is a sensor there I snuged it up and all is fine so far. Either that fixed it or it fixed itself LOL ! Good luck

Chuck,

I had the same issue you describe with the top up. The "TOP NOT SECURE" message would come and go, but it would consistently be displayed when the car went over a bump. My Tech 2 had no diagnostic messages, but I suspected the TOP CLOSED SWITCH (located on the passenger side inside the pin receiver) was intermittently making contact with the pin.

Driving around with the Tech 2 connected and a passenger to watch the switch change state while I went "bump hunting" confirmed the switch was the culprit. I performed the mechanical adjustment just in case it was on the ragged edge of making contact, but it didn't do any good. I ordered a new switch and installed it using the procedure in the shop manual and the problem is fixed.

As for an open LUGGAGE BARRIER SWITCH giving this message, it shouldn't. (Nothing's impossible with the electronics in this car, but it shouldn't.) In fact, it displays it's own message when it's not closed and the TOP CONTROL SWITCH is pressed to initiate a retract operation.

Sometimes, cycling the top one or two times will clear up isssues -especially relating to rear decklid movement issues when the fob switch, or either rear decklid switches are pressed and nothing happens.

Hope this helps.
