As those of us who have been to the past Rendezvous know, or those who have become members of The Club - an up-to-date detector is a must have for the up-coming CO trip :blinzel:

So, we have to update ours - it is the same one we bought for Rendezvous 3 (I know-I know) ... so, looking for some input - what have you guys updated with? Anyone have any experience with the new tech that deals with the mobile cams?

I bought a Valentine 1 9 years ago. Every three year I send it back to them and for $85. they send me an updated unit. I have a box of old Escorts that I put aside before getting the Valentine.

Out of "us" six Club members,,,, How many had radar detectors??? Didn't seem to do us any good!!!  :).

Depending on where you are, detectors may not do you much good. I utilize the new Lidar (laser radar) system, so when I lock my laser radar on you, it registers about the time the driver gets a beep telling them they have just been caught. Since it doesn't send out a constant signal, the radar detectors don't pick up any signal prior to me locking on your car.

I think that's an explanation from the "other side" of the law.
If that's the case,,,, I'll save my money and not spend it on a radar detector. I'll Get something else for the car.

Radar Detectors are not the end all solutions. They are apart of driver awareness. On a recent drive from Ohio to Florida. we encounter more speed traps than ever. Federal stimulus money is being used to hire more local police to write tickets to generate more revenue for localities. Just don't be the fastest car on the road. A good detector will let you know when they get hit.

Around here the police you laser systems. I gave up on radar detectors years ago and haven't had a ticket in over 30 years. I still have my lead foot though.

VEIL is a coating applied to the front end of a vehicle to reduce it's reflectivity to LIDAR. When used in conjunction with license plate covers and a good Radar detector, you have a better chance of slowing down and avoiding a ticket compared to an untreated car. There is no subtitute for common sense and situational awareness when applying the throttle however.

These guys are pretty thorough in their testing and their enthusiam for the V1 reflects what most V1 owners already know. Mine's paid for itself many times over.

I like to drive fast as much as most here probably do, but I decided about 15 years ago that the risk/benefit ratio was not good. I drive about 30,000 miles a year for business in my Tahoe, and I just can't run the risk of tickets, as they certainly impact your insurance rates! As I am insuring 5 cars, it could really add up!

So I just decided to slow down and drive the limit about 15 years ago and haven't had a speeding ticket since. So I guess the best tools for me are a speedometer and cruise control!

Yes, they have won. They have beaten me into submission.

I have a V1 on the Corvette and love it it will pick up radar as much as 3 miles out on the highway however, it does not pick up stationary speedcams. I bought for the XLR a Escort 9500IX runs on GPS and have been quite satified with the results. It will pick up radar over hills around curves and has saved me getting tickets so far.

I called Valintine and the customer service rep I talked to insisted the V1 works on speedcams. After hanging up the phone I drove 1 mile from my house and tried it again to see if it was me who over looked its ability. I found she was incorrect it does not pick up speedcams.

Speedway;)

I had to leave this morning and left out the most important feature of the Escort 9500IX which is it will pick up speedcams and red light cameras. It also talks to you and learns within its memory radar alerts that are false alerts and in turn they will not go off when you return to that area.

Speedway;)

Is there any grace? In Alberta, they can give as much as 10% over before they give chase. I try to stay within 5 to 10% of the posted rate and my last speeding ticket, was 1970 something. What can I expect travelling thru MT,WY & CO? Radar behind every billboard? :chuckle

Well, I know FOR SURE to stay out of Santa Rosa County in NM ....;)

In MT, they'll get you at 10 over. I usually travel at 5-7 over the posted limit and have no problem. In WY, they are stricter - I stay within 2-5 over the posted limit. In CO, I stay pretty much right on the posted limit. Actually, I see very few police in MT, WY, or CO. Maybe they are good at hiding???

Isn't there parts in MT, that don't have a posted speed limit?

Used to be, but not anymore. Those were the days!!! The feds were going to take away our fed highway funding if we didn't post a speed limit in line with the surrounding states. Now were 75 on Interstate, 70 on secondarys :(:(

I remember when I had an escort! I had a couple of them, but they were older than dirt. They both eventually stopped working and I am not even sure if they were detecting cops any more. But yeah, good times. I need to get another one, but a Valentine is probably what I am going to go with.
