What are your Holiday Traditions? Do you prepare special meals, watch movies,go on shopping trips,send cards or gifts?
 
Ours starts Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving Kevin and I cook dinner for my family eat around 2:00, they usually leave 5:00 or 6:00 then it's off to his mom's house. Day after Thanksgiving the Christmas decorations go up. Send out cards and gifts. Christmas Eve we host an open house for family and friends. Christmas morning breakfast and then off to my mom and sister's house to eat, drink and watch the kids open gifts. Usually day after Chrstmas decorations are taken down and out comes the decorative for New Years.
 
Usually spent with family, either Cindy's side or mine. We take turns, when we have Thanksgiving with Cindy's side of the family, we spend Christmas with my side. The next year we have Thanksgiving with my side and Christmas with her side of the family. With her family 2 hours away in Miles City and my family here, its just the easiest way to do it. The first year we were married, we tried having both Thankgiving and Christmas with both sides of the family. Thankgiving lunch here then off to Miles City for Thanksgiving dinner. Way to much driving and eating!!! Then, Christmas eve here in Billings, then up early to get to Miles City to watch to kids open gifts - just too much hassle and getting up WAY to early, so we decided on this and it's worked great!! Usually for Thanksgiving we have turkey, for Christmas its been Prime Rib...
 
I usually start around Thanksgiving, dropping hints like; "your mom and I are thinking of splitting up", and generally creating rifts between the kids and their kids. :)

By Christmas they are all ticked off and they leave us alone. That way we don't have to spend any money on them - we spend it all on ourselves !! :reddevil

Around two weeks out from Christmas I tell the neighbors that Doris is very sick, doctor's just don't know what's wrong with her :dunno:......and with my bad back, we would like to set out all the lights and decorations but I just can't do it. Eventually one of them breaks down and hangs all the stuff for me. ;)

This also works well for Holiday food; just keep dropping hints to the neighbors about how sick we are (really helps if you take a few weeks of vacation time so they think you are out of work) and how tough things have become.

They start dropping off pies, cookies, all kinds of great food ! :lol:

I tell them the only thing that seems to help with the pain is Brandy - well, and a little eggnog, but I can't bring myself to drive to the store............;)

I love Christmas ! :biggrinsanta::xmas:

The sad truth is .... he's actually like that .... ;)

(Nah .... but he talks a good story .... He could be my Santa any day ... His sleigh would be pulled by flamingos and full of wine ... :biggrinsanta: )


Our holidays, thankfully, are packed full of friends, and family. This year this season is not as joyful as we are spending most of it consumed with concern as 3 wonderful people in our lives are battling stage 4 cancers. A 10 year old little boy, a 37 year old wonderful "kid" , and a woman who has been my bf for over 50 years. It almost seems like this is a "cluster cancer" as all of us are from the same neighborhood.
If you're spiritual at all - please send some positive energy this way - we could sure use the boost up.
So - Christmas this year is a lot different for us. And we're very thankful for everyday that we still have with them in our lives ...

We are going ahead with plans to carry on for Christmas Eve with "my" family, Christmas Day with the "whole" family doing all the traditional things ... and looking forward to helping our friends do the same ...

Thanks to all of you ... thanks for another wonderful year of XLR forum friends and fun .... thanks for sharing and reading - and oh, man, am I looking forward to Bowling Green! Merry Christmas!

You have to watch; It's a Wonderful Life, Rudolph,& Christmas Vacation.:)


Great Christmas stories.
 
When I was growing up all of the holiday dinners were at my maternal grandparents. Ten adults, 8 children, all sat at the same table with Grandpa at the head saying the prayer. Grandma died in 1949 so that tradition ended but the daughters took over. 1951 my mother died, her oldest sister did Christmas dinner at her house that year and that was the end of that tradition. In years past when we lived in Denver I would drive downtown on Christmas day and pick up a carload of street people and take them to our home for a nice dinner. It got them out of the cold and put warm food in their bellies. My last big dinner party at my house was in 2004, I entertained 25 for sit down dinner and prepared all the food myself. That is the last time I have had a Christmas tree in the house. The last four years I have had Christmas dinner at friends. Have no clue where I will be this year, hopefully AZ where it will be warm. As we get older life changes and customs change but one thing about it all our memories are always with us.

Well said and true! Best memories I have is my childhood. Best Christmas was when my dad was still here with me, this January makes 10 years, I still miss him and things are not the same with out him.

I need to go pop that in the DVD tonight - need a good laugh (after watching that aweful Bears game).
 
Christmas cards

We always enjoy receiving Christmas cards from all of our friends. It is a nice way to end the year. Kathy sent out ours yesterday. They are headed to 18 states & 2 countries (Canada & Belgium).:wave:

Mine have been sitting in their box beside me since the day after Thanksgiving ..... I used to do them at work when I had time (:lol:) ...... Now, by the time the day is over .... so am I ... ;) My mantra this year is I WILL GET THEM DONE!

I love them too - I will probably be the last one that stops snail mail ... the mailbox to me has always been like opening a surprise package everyday....... I even love the catalogs ....

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE .....
